Hi All

I'm interested to know if anyone weighed a growing pup or a regular basis (ie weekly) and can let me have the data?

What was the birth weight and final racing weight?

I'm building up a spread sheet on pup weights

It is interesting to note that the growth in weight is fairly consistant and this initially produces a straight line graph.

As the growth slows the graph turns to an exponential leveling and then levels off completely.

Different pups grow at different rates and for different periods, hence two pups may start at the same weight at birth, one may grow on longer and their finish weight difference is great.

Rob.

I weigh my pups weekly but only from when i get them which is usually 7 weeks old , your welcome to their weights but dont know if you need them from birth which i dont have .

Thanks to all the owners who have supplied me weight data on their pups

Initial findings would suggest that a pup whippet is half its adult weight after ony 3 months (ie if you double a the weight of the pup at 13 weeks you get the final racing weight of the Whippet).

I would be interest to have some data on bigger whippets

Any body got any pup weights that ended up between 30 - 32lbs?

Please let me know.

Thanks, Rob....

Hi Rob

I have all my litters weights from birth to when they left at 8 weeks, some I know their racing weight for sure, some I can approximate, but unfortunately I have no record of weights after 8 weeks (even the ones I kept!)

If these are any use to you, I'll put them on a spreadsheet.

Ian

Hi All

Had a fair bit of interest and data on pup birth weights and matching them to final racing weights.

I'll publish the findings in the New Year.

Still looking for data on 32lb runners - any body got any?

You can email me direct.

Rob...

I have my pups birth weight, but haven't weighed him since. Will do next time I pass the vets!!!!!!!

Hi all - Happy New Year.

I have a lot of data on growing pups - but not in the 32lbs group.

I've started to put the facts together for an article in the Whippet - without the results of the stats tests.

Thanks a heap for all those who sent the data, if anyone has data on pups who ended up 32lbs I'd be greatful.

Rob...

Hiya Rob, They're our non-peds but we've had a lot of heavyweights so it might be useful

http://www.k9community.co.uk/forums/index....showtopic=66600

The pups at the time of posting are now just over a year old and racing weight as follows:

Pixel 31lb

Stan 28lb

Teddy 36lb

Gudd 40lb

Benson 45lb

What you might find useful is that while there is some correlation, there is often pups that throw the 'old wive's tales' formulas out the window.

Jenny looked like she was going to be a 40lber but she stopped growing at 26lb. Pixel by Tony's calculation would of struggled to meet 18lb (hence the name!) It was fairly accurate in predicting Stan's and Teddy's weights but Benson superceeded it by about 5lb, Gudd by about 9lb and Pixel a remarkable 13lb.

Thanks for that

Have you got any data for these pups around the 13 week mark?

Rob...

13 weeks = 91 days on excel doc but I've converted them here:

Pixel 13lb

Teddy 15lb 9oz

Benson 18lb

Stanley 13lb 15oz

Pixel was 198g at birth. Despite me supplementing her, the trauma of birth put her down to 178g at 3 days old. Tracking her weight over the first 4 weeks Tony was convinced she wasn't going to reach racing weight. I on the other hand was smitten with her and remember eyeing up a pet carrier for her - I figured if she couldn't race she could be our mascot! (w00t)

It's hard to appreciate size but we used to sing the chihuahua song to her :b

She goes silly daft when we sing it now, with the only difference being a 31lb whippet trying to jump on your head is a tad scary!

I really try to avoid getting Benson too excited! (w00t)

Hi Rob, I raced my old dog Xcite ( Xcess x WCRA Ch Flybynite) at 31 lb. At birth he was 16oz, and at the 13week point weighed in at 15lb. he reached his final racing weight at about 30 weeks old ie7-8 months.

Hope that helps the data collection.

Hi Lesley

That is interesting - as doubling Xcite's weight at 13 weeks would make him a 30lber. Which is with in error limits.

However, it is stated that big dogs grow on in time after 'little bitches' have stopped. But it would seem from your data that Xcite finished growing before his 1st Birthday - which is the format the the lighter/small dogs.

Thanks for your data.
