Oliver and myself are travelling back from Italy (he doesn’t fly so we take the train) and we have stopped in Lyon.

I was really shocked this morning to see that they were still selling puppies and kittens at the local market.

I thought that France would have got tough on this. I felt like I was back in France 10 years ago.

Very sad sight to see :-(

Sadly the French seem to ve a law unto themselves. A few years ago I saw what i thought was easter decorations of little coloured chicks. When I looked closer I realised they were real dead dyed chicks , their feet stapled to the bits of wood they stood on. Needless to say I felt physically sick...

.

when i was very small, 5-&-dime stores still sold dyed day-old chicks at Easter as live "gifts" for children.
Needless to say, the chicks didn't usually fare well - chicks are precocious in that they can feed themselves, but they are also fragile, can't take drafts or cold, need a heated area to survive until they feather-out, & ideally, need a HEN with good mothering instincts. Most of them died within days of sale. :(

3 that did not die, given to a boy in my elder-bro's Cub Scout troop, ended up in our backyard flock of Rhode Island Reds - the little barstewards were all roosters, pint-sized Leghorns, pugnacious, nasty, & aggressive. They'd follow U at a distance to take any opp to peck the back of yer legs, pecking U bloody, or in the hen-coop, would leap off a roost to strike at yer head & shoulders with clawed feet, beating wings, & striking beak.
They became soup shortly after they feathered out - much-too mean for our friendly, calm hens. [We didn't enjoy them as meat, either - tough as shoe-leather, even when diced small.]

This is awful. The way that their is no law for selling pup/kittens just baffles me.
