Hello,

We got got our puppy a week ago and a I have a few questions regarding his adjustment to new homes and us etc. Just as a bit of background - I feel like we have bonded very quickly, he follows me everywhere and he sleeps next to our bed.

Due to the current situation everyone is in my fiancé would like to go to Newcastle (to his family home) as it’s much bigger than our place in London and stay there whilst the lockdown takes place.

The pros for my puppy is that there is another dog there and new people so he can socialise a little bit. However I’m a little worried that we will be taking him from our home where he will have been for a week and a half to another one.

My question is, do you think it will stress him out going to another home with 3 new people and a new dog or do you think he will be okay as long as we are with him? I also don’t want him thinking that’s his home if we end up being there longer than we have been at our actual house.

I might be overthinking it all and maybe he will be fine as long as he’s with us but I would like some other opinions, thanks!

I would think he will be ok.

In case you weren't sure, though, socialisation isn't just about other dogs - rather allowing him to see, hear and get used to people and situations calmly and from a safe position. There is quite a good checklist here - it wouldn't be practical, or necessary to get everything on the list but it's a good guideline and illustrates that socialisation is about more than just having a run around with other dogs. I would recommend going, just like I recommend all my friends in NYC to go to the country if they can. It's great that you are trying to think through the implications of the move for the puppy... but, IMHO, the decisions need to be made based of safety and health considerations for humans. If G-d forbid you or your fiancé get sick and need to be hospitalized in London, the impact on the puppy will be much, much worse. I would pack tonight and leave tomorrow. We haven't seen the worst of this yet. All the concerns that you mentioned are valid, but can be easily managed.
