Puppy Has Broken Leg

Hi,

really sad today, my 7 week old puppy broke his leg this morning and is in the vets waiting for it to be fixed....he was only playing with litter brothers and sisters but they were playing quite rough and I had told them off......not been on here for quite a while but has anyone else experienced this - its my second litter and I am sure I had done everything correctly

how bad is the break? What is the vet doing with it?

The only time one of my pups broke her leg was when she jumped out of the window (ground floor) after a cat and hit her hind leg on a chair standing there. It was a green fracture, my vet did not strap it because that makes the muscles waste. She had to be crated for weeks. She screamed all the time, so i ended up carrying her around most of the time. In the end there was no sign of her injury, she was even taken into a ring; got one reserve challenge. She is now an old lady and fit as a fiddle.

Hi,

He had his operation yesterday and has broken his thigh bone i think - it is pinned and he seems to be recovering - just shocked as the only way he could of done this is if one or more of the litter jumped on him - the boys are quite chubby and so was he....i will hopefully have him home today so I will keep putting updates

UPDATE - woohoo vet has called - he has eaten and done toilets etc so he can come home tonight - I have been and bought him some comfy beds and some new toys and a new hot water bottle so will pick him up and give loads of snuggles tonight

hi, just make sure the vet changes plaster often as their legs are growing so quickly, I had a 9 week old broke her thigh and when the vet took the plaster off she had bad ulcerations caused by the cast rubbing, it must have been very uncomfortable for her. On a good note she made a full recovery and was the fastest bitch I have ever had, good luck

Hi, the vet has pinned it and not plastered it. We got him home last night and he was full of beans its going to be hard keeping him calm as he was so happy to see us. He had chicken and rice for tea and then settled down with milk before bed. He just woke up twice through the night and I slept next to his crate to make sure no problems.

This morning he ate a good breakfast and had more chicken for lunch and is now at my mums house in front of the TV!

He is having a check-up on Tuesday and then will go in as a day patient a week after for xrays. The vet has also asked if i dont keep him would I let her have him but after all this how can I let him go!!!!!

Well puppy is now called Razzle and is just soooooo naughty, because he is still on cage rest he is getting so much better - putting weight fully on his leg, scratching etc and his mad hour consists of digging his bed, ripping every piece of paper and then proceeding to lie under his bed whilst growling.

He is going back to the vets tomorrow (tuesday) for another xray to see if it is healing correctly. Now when you open the cage he tries to escape and if you stop him he growls and tries to get your arm.....little bugger! but at least he is feeling better - when he is quiet he loves just laying in your arms or on the sofa but think we are spoiling him a bit too much :wub:
