My 16 month old blue girl, Sox, got up at 6am on Sunday morning and was extremely lame on her left front leg.

After going back to bed again for 3 hours she then exhibited lameness of the left hind as well.

No signs of any injury and absolutely no chance of having injured herself as the night before I took her for a lead walk and she was perfectly sound then.

At first I thought she had fallen off the bed in the middle of the night and pulled a muscle along her back which was then causing the lameness, but as the day wore on she seemed fine again and I took her for a very short lead walk down the lane last night (about 100 yards). After sleeping for a couple of hours she then exhibited the lameness in her front leg again

This morning she was lame in front, although not as severe as yesterday, and later on this morning she has also limped on the hind leg again - bringing it under her rather than stretching it back as she moves.

Still no sign of injury other than I feel that her shoulder and thigh muscles may be a little tight?? Can whippets get cramp for no reason and, if so, what should I be doing about it?

She is perfectly fine in every other way - eating well and it obviously feeling better today because she was thinking of jumping up to get the cat food!

I just can't work out where this lameness is coming from .......... any ideas???

TIA

I think it's a strange one but I would just lead walk he short walks for about two weeks and see if it improves . If it got worse in that time then I would go to the vet .

Sorry can't help Jane.....................I hope Sox is going to be ok :luck: maybe it is a muscle thing and will sort it self out, just keep a eye on her and if its persists a trip to the vet and hopefullythey will find out whats causing this

Lots of :* :* :* to Sox

  sorry i cant help either but i hope she is soon back to normal

No idea jane

Hope she shows signs of recovery really soon hun :huggles:

All the best :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck:

Sounds like a muscle strain, when she relaxes it's okay, gets up and it goes into a slight spasm. I would suggest massage with and embrocation. The Greyhound Mega Store is the place to look, as they have all sorts on there for racing dogs!!!!!!!!

Hope it rights itself.

Definitely sounds like a problem with her back - either muscle spasm or similar. Do you know of any canine chiropractors nearby? Might be worth a look in to see if they can help.

I hope you soon get Sox sorted Jane :luck:

If it continues I know a very good animal acupuncturist who practises in Devon. She is a trained and experienced vet as well as having trained as an acupuncturist in China, and is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. PM me if you would like her details. Hope the lovely Sox is feeling better soon :huggles:

I'm no expert but now I lure course mine regularly I've picked up some tips. I'd massage the shoulder, thigh and loin muscles twice a day using something like Trainers Choice available on Greyhound Megastore and lead walking only for a week/2 weeks depending on how it goes. If she was still lame though after a couple of massages I'd be getting her to the vet for a check up.

Hope she gets better soon :)

PS assuming you've also checked for any injury on the pads or around the nails

Yes, I did that :D

It was the first place I looked as it seemed like foot lameness on first sight (at 6am, lol) but when she is going lame, she is holding her front leg a little bit outwards and straighter from the shoulder which leads me to believe it is probably a muscular problem. And with the hind leg - she seems to keep that underneath her when she is feeling it. And not necessarily at the same time as the front leg

Thank you for all the information and suggestions everyone :D She is nowhere near as lame as she was yesterday so I think things are going the right way, but it is still apparent on an intermittent basis so I'm keeping her very quiet at the moment (not easy with a blue whirling dervish, lol   )

I'll keep this thread updated as things progress

Jane if mine ever do anything like this...I massage the legs too with horse linament...Im sure you will have something similar in the house.

We have a Peppermint one...not sure of its name right now but I could find out. It certainly sounds like a muscular thing...or ligament maybe.

Archie often 'hangs' his hind legs .....then it goes away after a while...and with Kobi its always a front one...strange.
