Is there a law that states a pet shop in the UK can not sell Puppies & Kittens From their premises?

Or is it "just" frowned upon?

Any info on specific legislation would be helpful if there is some

Thanks

Don't know about the law but I know a pet shop near us sells kittens, in fact I know of a couple. Not seen puppies for years though. Both keep the cats in glass fronted cabinets, but I must admit they seem fairly happy, though how they vet potential homes... anyones guess

One shop is actually a very good shop with knowledgeable staff. The other shop is the one in leeds which had its licence removed some years back for poor living conditions for the animals. Seems to have cleaned up its act somewhat. They also sell ferrets which I found strange as I've never seen them in pet shops before. They also keep a couple of monkeys which are not for sale

With regards to your first question I am concerned that a shop near by is selling puppies (where are they coming from , Puppy Farm perhaps?) and kittens ( that they get free to good home and then sell on ?) Not sure of the legal side ?

Since you didn't get your free red Mills I'll give you a Tenner of Pet ! :p But seriously if you are after another give us a bell. Whppets need good homes like the one you give Jill.

pet shops need a licence from the local council - I think the reason that most pet shops dont sell them is because of public reaction, they would get more inspections, and the licences are expensive.

I have a shop (unused at the moment) and I did look into opening it as a Pet Shop.Theres so much you need to think about first though, and havnt been able to go ahead with it. Maybe one day though.

Heres a link from the internet I found useful. Hope it helps....

Trading standards etc.

Sadly there is nothing to prevent pet shops from selling puppies, and there are many that still do. They are one of the outlets used by puppy farms :(

I've seen loads that sell kittens. None that sell puppies thankfully.

The licensing is done by the local authority for pet shops- similar to other licensing projects they do taxis, circuses, boats etc and the price of this licence can vay dramatically from town to town, I believe the figure is set by the local authority. There was quite a big case close to us that a pet shop was having to pay huge amount for their licence and thought it was unfair - as a shop in the next town was paying only 1/3 of their price - not sure of the finer details. I bought my first kitten from a pet shop I'd been going in for dog food and watching this tiny little thing seeing her brother and sisters sell and decided to buy her and had her for 14 long and lovely years, that shop used to also sell puppies but I think perhaps the licensing laws tightened up and stopped lots of places selling pups. Not too sure on this Claire, but I managed a Pet Shop in Lisburn and we were'nt allowed to take in any kittens or puppies (we were always getting people asking us) as we did'nt have the relevent licence, but as others have stated it is up to the council as to how much they charge,Lisburns was really expensive and both myself and the owner of the shop did'nt agree with them being sold thru a Pet Shop anyway.

Do you know of somewhere over here doing it? I thought Smithfield in Belfast was the last place that sold them like that and I am going back years!!

there used to be one in slough that sold both puppies and kittens, but it closed recently, thank god  i must say the kittens were quite outgoing, but some of the pups looked too young imo  i dont think its a good way to buy or sell pups, sellers dont get to vet homes (or dont bother) and buyers dont get to see mum, whether shes of sound type and temperament, which is vital.

here in scotland ther is no law against the sale of pups in pet shops but a lot of shops refrain from selling them due to health concerns

I've seen a few selling kittens, and Harrods selling puppies at a rediculas price (are you paying for the pup or the fact that it came from Harrods?) I hated it in Harrods, it was way too hot (because the python and parrot apperntly needed the warmth) The two pups where flat out and panting. According to the assistant you have to go on a waiting list and then will be given the puppy as and when it becomes available. So I asked why there were puppies in the shop, surely if there is a waiting list then there is no need? Apprently they put the puppies in the cage for a week before giving to the new owner. I was absolutley horrified. I have no idea if this has changed at all it was about 3years ago now...

A lot of pet shops/pet superstores around here sell puppies and kittens. And not just the odd litter either, at any one time they have up to 6 or 7 litters of both puppies and kittens available. Pure breeds, crosses, the lot - it's about time it was stopped.
