hi all, i have a problem with a rat around my hen house and just dont know what to do..

on one hand i could trap him live and then release him down the fields to live out his days with the other rats but on the other hand i could bludgeon him to death and hang him by his knackers from a nearby tree to ward off the other rats.

any advice would be much appreciated.. :thumbsup:

If you live in England the local council will come and put bait boxes get rid of them for free. I had to do this, as I have 2 greyhounds who would not even get out of bed to investigate.

Can dogs catch anything from the rats? I would be have to think twice before letting my dogs taste rats blood :x There is usualy a local airgunner who would be happy to relieve you of your problem :thumbsup:

Yes Lloyd dogs can catch Leptospiral jaundice off the rats urine but a fully inoculated dog is inoculated against the disease.

Hi Sparky,

I think you'll find it is illegal to release the rat back into the wild once you have caught it! So if you do trap it, you are obliged by law to destroy it. If you release it into the wild, apart from it being illegal it only serves to allow the rat to breed and multiply.Rats are a serious health hazard and I think it would be best to choose the most suitable method of destroying it.

You need a Bedlington Terrier.

We have two at the mo that will go through 'hell and high water' if they smell rats. My grand-father always allowed his terriers to go after rats and believe me after a pup gets bit by its first rat he/she will make sure its the last time it gets bit.

Only 1 problem with mine is - they are convinced the rats are still alive until there are bit all round the place. Makes it messy to clean up but I have found local seagulls or rooks now watch - and they pick up the pieces.
