I tried raw chicken wings with mine but Taz nearly choked on one (stupid dog swallowed it practically whole), it was very scary and has put me off trying again.

I'm quite interested in feeding raw but my current dogs are all older and seem to be doing very well on what they have (mixture of CSJ and home cooked) so I'm not going to change things now.

I also freeze my pet mince from the butchers and then defrost too,same with chicken wings and the bones :thumbsup: :thumbsup:

I was just about to add the same Jane....all mine go into the freezer first.....Salmonella bacterias are usually killed off by freezing. This can also I add be caught from live chickens too

thats why we are so careful about the hand washing at the farm...can be caught from seagulls too...

Also would like to add Id never ever used the BARF..raw diet either until I got my Oscar in 2004....I would never consider feeding anything else now...and is much more natural for the dogs

ie: thats what they were born with teeth ... and Ive fed all mine as pups with chicken wings too from about 12 weeks...I just cut them into smaller portions with kitchen scissors...

and they have all loved them and never ever had a problem crunching them up. :thumbsup:

Liza...cooked bones are the most dangerous to dogs. and should never be fed to them.......raw bones are more chewable and not brittle....

I think Lisa meant that she cooks the chicken wings and then takes the meat off the bone before feeding it to her dogs, which is what I do and I also feed fresh sardines when available and tinned when not.

Howie gets raw chicken wings and drumsticks, turkey wing pieces, lamb flaps (ribs) and neck and beef ribs. Many Australian dogs are fed kangaroo but my dogs don't like it. My source of fresh rabbit has dried up.

He is also fed Artemis kibble.

At least one major outbreak of salmonella in the USA came from processed dog food.

The best prevention against salmonella or other potential food contamination is to purchase fresh human grade meat, store it appropriately (I freeze it too) and feed it fresh.

When you consider some of the things dogs eat, their guts are capable of handling a fair bit.

who is your vet? at the moment i travel around 50-60 miles for a vet who specialises in lurchers.

I used to feed raw chicken wings till Fleur , who isnt greedy , brought some bones back up one day and their was a really large piece that was sharp , had it not come up staright I dread to think what could have happend , so no more chicken wings for my gang , couldnt take the risk , JMO obviously n :unsure:

There have been many discussions on this particular subject. I think it is fair to say that there is no 'one size fits all' policy. I personally don't feed an entirely 'raw' diet as it did not suit my dog. He has raw for breakfast and a good quality complete for tea. He also has oily fish 2/3 times a week. As others have said, all my 'raw' foodstuffs are frozen for at least 24 hours then defrosted before feeding. I would never mix raw with cooked food in one meal.

If your dog is well, happy and healthy on what you are feeding then that is fine. I have friends who are vegetarian.... it wouldn't suit me, but each to their own. :thumbsup:

Our two enjoy frozen chicken wings or necks each morning.

Just on the salmonella. Toddlers have been know to get it from Frog poo, fish tanks and pond water.

While we are on the subject of raw, how much do you feed? I was aiming 2-3% of bodyweight.

We feed our Whippets twice as much food over our winters than over our very hot summers as they are much less active in the heat (Northern Australia) We watch their ribs and spine and adjust their food accordingly.

what fish oils do you use?

Sorry, I think maybe you misunderstood me. I feed Sardines/Mackerel/Pilchards not an actual fish oil supplement. :thumbsup:
