Hi all, I noticed Merlins leg (inner hind leg) was a bit red yesterday but today it is really bad. It is deep red, bruised looking, and, looks and feels hard and swollen - the 'bruise' is spreading and the whole area feels hot to the touch but especially around the swollen part. I thought he may of been stung by a bee but I can't see a sting mark. He is not limping and his behaviour and appetite are normal. Does anyway have any idea's?

Thank you

it sounds to me like he has torn his gracilus muscle, probably only slightly but it does bruise quite bad, i recommend as bertha say cold compress and arnica gel and if you have a greyhound muscle man locally go and visit him, if it is what i say it is then no off the lead, just lead work as you don't want to damage it further after a few days the swelling will go and you might be able to feel the muscle knotted, slight lump that feels stringy hope this has helped

Hi, unexplained bruising should always be checked by a vet, some bleeding disorders show in this way, a small knock will cause massive bruising, Im not suggesting for one minute it is anything sinister but just that you see a vet before any other treatment jan

Hi Debbie, I think you may well be right, i've googled this injury and seen some pic's & this could well be what Merlin has. Unfortunately I haven't been able to get on the internet since I first posted this message so i've been carrying on his normal walks as he hasn't been limping or appearing to be in pain and i'd convinced myself it was a bee sting, I will now make sure he has lead walks only.

The bruising has now gone and the swelling has reduced although I can still feel a hard ridge around the top of his inner leg. Do you think he should see a vet at this stage or do you think resting/arnica will be enough?

Depending on how big the ridge is, some vets can sew the tear but that means going under an anesethic, me personally i would continue resting and arnica, do this for several weeks giving it time to heal properly as muscle tears take time to heal, have you got a greyhound muscleman near you, most trainers use them if you have take him along

glad i could help, i hope he has a speedy recovery :D

Well the racing kennels are nearby complete with greyhound vet so I would imagine there must be a greyhound muscleman there (although i've not heard of this before), I will see if I can make enquiries. Thanks again.
