Gingko was one half of my pair of freaky Devon Rex cats. He's never been a well lad, suffering from a lifelong ailment concerning his bile duct - but with steroids and plenty love he's had a full and happy life.

He's been getting frailer gradually over the past year - and as his kidneys started to fail he got so thin that neighbours started asking if I was feeding him!

This past week though he's gone into rapid decline - to the point that I have been trying to make the dreadful decision about whether I leave him til Monday, for his appointment with our own well known vet - or take him to the emergency vets to pts.

Last night although he was clearly near the end he was clearly peaceful and not distressed, so i decided to wait and see what the morning brings.

And in the night he had slipped away - at home with his best buddy and without the smell of vets in his nose.

I am glad to have been able to spare him an hours ride to a strange place in order to end it all and glad that his last sight was of familiar surroundings.

So, farewell Gingko - nearly 15 is not bad for a Devon - glad to have known you , you're going to be missed you freaky lil kinkster

Sorry to hear that, I remember what it was like to lose my old 16 year old siamese; when they've been with you so long it's very hard without them :'( I've got one of 12 who is glued to me in every waking and sleeping hour I spend at home, I know it will be very hard when we're finally without her. At least he was well cared for throughout his long life and went as peacefully as possible. Hope his little curly friend isn't too upset without him too :huggles:

:( sorry to here about your loss :huggles: RIP Gingko

Sorry to hear the news Urchin, I know what you were going through last night, RIP Gingko you curly haired little fella.

So sad to hear about Gingko :(

I have experienced a similar situation and I know it is devastating.

But it is lovely that little Gingko had a good life and was in the best place to go to sleep, at home with familiar sounds and smells

Run free, Gingko

Awww so sorry to hear this :( 15 years is a wonderful age and at least he was at home at the end.

RIP Gingko ~ Run free at Rainbow Bridge

Thanks for the kind words folks

I buried Gingko today - in a huge plant pot (yes, I know that sounds odd, but my garden isn't planned yet and I'd hate to put him somewhere that ends up under a shed or being dug up) and i've ordered a gingko tree to plant over him when he does go into the ground proper. For now he has a lovely chocolate cosmia (?) and deep red pansies.

I called the dogs over when I put him in, so that they know he's gone and don't go round the house looking for him. They both sniffed him gently all over - and I know they know it's Gingko as any other deceased creature gets the 'is that dinner' response.

Moki (the other of my curly cats) has come upstairs for big cuddles tonight - he found himself a box earlier and refused to come out of it, poor lamb

Charlie,what can I say hun....

So sad to hear your news, but what a lovely end to a lovely life - going in his sleep at home is so much nicer than a trip to the vets.

Also glad you were brave enough to let the dogs see him - our vets always recommended it, but people are often not strong enough to carry it through. Well, done you, and the Ginko tree is a lovely idea. Thinking of you :huggles:

:( When my little dog died my last cat grieved and looked for her constantly for a long time (though she didn't outlive her by long :( )

Re. the pot, if there's any chance you have foxes in your area I'd put a paving slab over the top just in case :luck: The Gingko idea is lovely :))

RIP Gingko :huggles:

So sorry to hear about your loss, we lost our old cat Baggins last week so I know how sad you must be right now. Our boy is buried on the rockery & we are looking for some orange plants to put there (he was ginger)

Maybe they will meet up in kitty heaven & talk about their happy times with us. :b

RIP to both of them

Julie

I'm so sorry to hear this but you did the best for Gingko... the way you've worded the first post was quite moving
