This is a post I never thought I would have to make but my darling whippet boy Jester was hit by a car and killed instantly on Monday.I was walking in our favourite park with my whip bitch and my sister and her two terriers. My two were running like loons as usual coz its very rabbity in this park.Kitty came running back alone and we thought that Jester would follow along soon but he didn't.We called and called for about 20 mins then an elderly lady came running down the hill and broke the news to me.She said that both dogs came running out of a bush,Kitty darted back but Jester ran straight into the road! The park is very big but of course whippets can get very far very quickly. The man who knocked Jester over reported it to the police and he said that his car sustained some "considerable damage".I have my dogs insured so know I have got to claim on my insurance for 3rd party liability!

When you lose a dog because of old age it is awful but to lose a dog in his prime (Jester was 6) it is devastating.Poor Kitty is so depressed,I did let her see his body before I took him to a pet cemetary but whether she understood I don't know. The other difficulty is seeing other dog walkers around who say"only the one today"? When I explain I always break down and I think people feel so awful.

He has left such a hole in our lives.I would consider getting another dog at some stage but unfortunatley my personal circumstances have changed recently( my husband left me 6 weeks ago) and the timing is not right.

I know one thing for sure,I miss Jester far more than I miss my husband!

:'( So sorry to hear your news. That sort of accident must be among all our worst nightmares. I know it's certainly one of my fears, and I feel so sad for you at this horrible time, Teresa. There's nothing anyone can say to make you feel better :( but try to remember all the wonderful times you had with lovely Jester.

Run free now, boy :huggles:

Such sad news. :( How awful for you to lose Jester in that way. I hope you will be able to look back with happy memories of him.

RIP Jester. :huggles:

Oh dear, I'm so sorry to hear this :( . I can't imagine what it must feel like to lose one so suddenly when everything was normal and happy just a few moments earlier.

Eventually you must take some comfort from it having been quick, but of course right now that's no comfort at all.

My thoughts are with you at this difficult time.

I am so sorry to hear such terrible news, what a dreadful shock it must have been. :( Poor Jester, thank goodness it was quick for him, but that doesn't make it easy for you I know. This is something that could happen to any of our dogs, especially when they go off rabbiting, and I think we have probably all had nightmares about it. :(

My sincere condolences

RIP Jester :(

So Sorry. :(

Take comfort in the fact that he was doing what he loved best and is unlikely to have known anything about the accident.

We've lost a much loved dog in a similar way and it's so hard to come to terms with. I had panic attacks for weeks afterwards which was silly because it had already happened and there was nothing I could do. I really feel for you.

This could happen to any one of us sighthound owners, so I hope you dont blame yourself in anyway.

I think it does help for them to see a body, I believe that they do understand. Kitty is naturally going to miss Jester but atleast she isnt wondering where he is.

:huggles: to you both.

:'( Sorry sorry to hear this i cant begin to imagine how you must be feeling :huggles:

OMG what a dreadful, dreadful thing to happen. Cant re read it without sobbing, you poor thing. Our thoughts are with you so much. Please share your pain with us all if it helps you, and PM if you need to talk. RIP Jester.

:( Oh I'm sooo sorry. What awful news. Our deepest sympathy and lots of hugs from all our dogs for you and Kitty. It's a terrible thing to happen.

I once hit a dog with my car and the car left the road and crashed rather badly. I couldn't have avoided the dog as he ran out from behind some bushes and he was killed. I was injured too but at the time was utterly devastated about the dog. There was nothing I could do but it still reduces me to tears even 14 years later.

Yes your insurance will have to pay the driver but I hope he feels something for you and your loss. I felt like a murderer for years... but it was a terrible accident.
