Morning All,

I could really do with some advice as when I take both my whippets out for walks in the mornings there is still frost on the ground and recently Rocky's paws around the pads start to bleed (like they are chapped) and then he goes lame so I have avoided taking him out in the mornings until the ice/frost has gone. I am now feeling really guilty as Rocky wants to come with Bailey & I for a walk :- "

I am also curious to know if this is common and if any of you have experienced this with your whippets. Rocky is now 8 and 1/2 years old and its not as though he has experienced this loads before, a little last year but not as major.

I know there are boots out there for dogs to wear but haven't brought myself to go down this route yet and in someways I am hoping you will be able to give me some ideas - ie - put vaseline on them before I go out or something!!!!!! :- "

Thank you for any advice you can offer me

I've had this with my shibas and I put it down to the salt they throw on the pavements when its frosty . I used calendula drops in warm water and bathed their feet in that then dried them off and rubbed in calendula cream ( got both from the health food shop) and it helped greatly . Now when there's salt around I avoid walking them on the pavements and stick to grassy areas and I've had no more problems since .

Before I'd finished reading your post I was thinking vaseline.

If no one has any better ideas, it may be worth trying putting some on before you take him out. It may help.

Hope his tootsies are better soon!

Glad I am not the only one who has experienced this. I must admit I probably don't do enough road work as its all fields and country walks so this maybe a reason for his pads softening up and with this weather it isn't helping. Thank you for the advice - nice to know its worked for your Shibas  Wish me luck!!! :luck:

pets at home do a PAD WAX that is very good for this kind of thing it also prevents them slipping on laminate floors

Only thinking vaseline as that is what we all do with our horses at some point  Think I need to do more road work and harden his feet off - bless him. Some great ideas so will try them :huggles:

Oh yes, Baileys cut re-opened this morning, took him to the vets and they said leave it for a week and if not healing he will need stitches.

Big :huggles: to Austin x

I used Shaw's Paw wax on Willow last year and found it good. If you google it you should get various sites that sell it. Otherwise I'd go the vaseling route as well.

Hi,

Try using Active Mankua honey on his cut, I used this on one of my whippets, as the stitches had not bind the cut together and it was fantastic, the hole closed up within a week. I got it from the honey doctor website, they do it in a cream for only about £10.

Hello there,

Thank you for that, I have been asked to use hibi scrub to clean it for next day or two - I am sure it will heel on its own but we will see. Will have a nose on the site for this - glad your whippet did well with this, must have been a nasty cut for the stitches not to have worked. Thank you again :D

Definitely give paw wax or vaseline a try, it will create a sort of barrier between the paw and the ground.

I use Paw wax too....Kobi suffers with his paws more than the other two.

Also I have a little pot of callendula herbal cream from Dorwest Herbs, its meant for skin wounds and such like but I sometimes use it on his pads to sooth also.
