 Hi All,

We have been wondering when/if whippets get into a settled routine?

Eric is all over the place at moment with his eating and sleeping patterns. We have had him in a crate from the start in the kitchen when we go to bed,And he is fine.

But he has been waking up at all hours,Nothing is consistant. And he barks with a loud bark :- "

The neighbors have'nt said anything yet.

We have tried feeding him at regular times as well as his exercise.

He wakes up anywhere between 5.00am to 7.00am.....

Yes,We realise he is only five and a half month old.....but any ideas?

And re-call training?

Thanks Phill.

Routine...what's that :D Murphy is around 4 months and he has always woken me early(half 5),mainly cos he is a little piggie and wants his brekkie.Soon as he has filled his boots he settles back to sleep. My other 3 settled far quicker than Murph has, they all sleep in much later.

Murphy was ina routine while I was at work - walkies at 6, then food at 7. play until 8 then into his crate for a sleep until lunchtime when hubbie fed him and put him out, returned him to the crate until I got home at about 330, then freedom in the garden until teatime. He always knew when to get into his crate and seemed really happy with it.

But then along came holidays and so he has no routine at all at the mo - depends on if I have a busy day or not. I just hope he settles back into one in Sept.

Jinny has a routine which she ensures I stick to! LOL

She has always slept with us and we go to bed quite late. When she was very young she used to wake me up by mouthing my hand so that I could take her for a wee (normally around 6am). Now she's older she gets up when I get up and after going out she then goes back to bed on the settee until 10ish.

Then it's playtime with my GSDs with kips in between and a long walk about 5pm.

She doesn't like eating before 2pm, and prefers her main meal at around 6pm which was really difficult when she was meant to be eating 3 or 4 times a day!

She's now 4 1/2 months old and knows her own mind (w00t) - luckily she's been no bother in any way other than the eating and a car travel issue! :x

Most animals seem to thrive on a routine - it represents security for them - good luck with Eric!! :luck:

We have a fairly orderly existence and the dogs are used to a routine, Peter made the mistake of giving the dogs a little treat to take to bed each night which has always worked well until, smart guy Dylan decided he would dictate bed-time and so when he is ready he sits right in front of Peter staring at him and then trots into the kitchen to the cupboard, if this does not work back he comes and sits staring at Peter again, and then off to the cupboard. He keeps this up until he gets his treat and then it's off to bed for everyone. We don't usually mind but 8.30 is a bit early for us all to go to bed. (w00t)

Amie has always been a early riser, more or less since she was born!

I no longer have to set the alarm cloch, as every morning at 5.30a.m she is at the bedroom door scratching to wake me up!

Only way to cure her, if I want a lay in, is to take her to bed with me! :huggles:

gypsy's routine...

get up, wee, get on the bed for a cuddle, walk, more cuddles, bit of training, cuddles and sleep.........sleep............sleep...........cuddles, sleep........more sleep.........more walk, run.........sleep, play..........eat, another walk/run.....play......jump into her bed, get covered over, and sleep.................and another day begins (w00t)

hard life ahe :- "

Eric is simular with his eating (w00t)

He has been fine in the crate,And sleeps fine just up at varying times.... Is this a whippet thing?

Just been for a long walk and he is asleep now

My little Soloman was always exactly the same, he always wanted to go out to the toilet anywhere between 4am and 6am. I tried taking water away after he had had his after meal drink to get him to go through the night, but to be honest, he is now 18 months and still needs to go out for a toilet stop around 6am ish. I did give in though, and once he had had his toilet stop, let him come to bed with me, that way he will sleep until I decide to get up hee hee. I don't bother crating him at all at night now as he is a much better hot water bottle

Mine have a routine, it's not entirely strict as we do slip on occasions (particularly the weekends!) but I have found it helps and Logan has never cried at night. :luck:

They are always fed at the same time every day - once at 7.30am and another time at about 8pm after their walk.

They are put into the crate, as we go to bed and don't make a peep and are not let out until I go down at 6.45 in the morning, when they run straight up to get in bed with their Dad.

They are then on the go, walk a couple of hours after brekkie and then mooching around, playing in the garden with a bit of snoozing mixed in throughout the day as my OH is at home all day at the moment.

I got a bit too relaxed and let them sleep in bed with us for a few nights on the trot and then when he had to go back in his crate he was not a happy bunny, so I've stopped this as it wasn't fair on him. It was entirely my fault and I've learnt my lesson

Phill - when you have 2 whippets + you find they sleep in much longer in the morning!!

When Frankie was an only Whip he use to wake up early but as soon as he had Holly to cuddle that stopped :huggles:

We stick to a routine too wherever possible. Archie is coming up 5 months too at the end of August...

he sleeps in his crate and ususally goes to bed around 11pm....and not a squeak from him till 7am even after that time sometimes.

I try to stick to the same mealtimes every day unless we are out for some reason....but as near as possible to these times.

I sometimes give Archie a meal around 8/9pm which is his last one, he is still on 4 meals a day and seems to need it, as he is extremely active too....but he will sleep during the day too, for quite long periods.

Archies re-call training is quite good for a young puppy too, but he does have the others to watch.

A little training a day Phil will go a long way.....take some treats to an open field...and even just do 10 mins a day....sit, stay.....come or fetch....

Archie loves bringing balls back to you..hes better than Oscar at this one...

depends on the individual whippet Phill, some settle easily, others can take quite some time, single dogs often seem to take longer, where as 2+ dogs will take a cue from the other

does he eat all his dinner in one go or does he graze? he may be getting ready to drop one of his meals, you may also need to adjust the final meal time so he doesn't have the urge to go to the loo mid way through the night waking him up

um if you find the cure for them going deaf when they see something can you tell his dad  :D

in the meantime back on the lead and a tonne of treats in your pocket calling him back every time his mind seems to be wandering

:luck:   :luck:   :luck:

                                      Thanks Phill.

Thanks for the advice/help

Becka,He is defo a grazer! Hardly ever eats all his food in one go_On 2 meals a day now + treats. His last meal is about 7pm(too early?),He eats the other between 1-30pm- 2pm.Just won't eat first thing in the morning

Yep,Doing long line work with lots of treats, and comes back to me most of the time :- " I will keep at it as i know they have "selective" hearing

When he wakes up,He can bark for England!

Thanks again all

I think mine would have been grazers if given the option - so they get 10 minutes to eat each of their meals and if it's not all gone it goes in the bin and they won't get anything else until the next meal. They won't starve themselves, so in no time they were gobbling up their dinner within 5 minutes.

My lot are a really lazy rabble!!

Garden at 6am.. back to bed before I've even switched the kettle on!

Breakfast at 8am.

And then back to bed 'till lunchtime and if I try to walk them before 11am I get the filthiest looks .. even from the baby-of-the-family!

There's a 'wappy-hour' around 12-1pm then it's back to bed for the rest of the day until dinner at 4.30pm.

Then there's another 'wappy-hour' at 6-ish which is often another walkie to check their pee-mail ....

Then bed.... again!

checking their pee-mail (w00t)

i've never heard it called that before

Phill, let me know if you would like to take Eric out with his uncle Otis one day for a training session, Tissy is fab on his recall and if Eric isn't as thick as his dad he might pick up a thing or two

becka

Thanks again Becka

He did'nt stir at all today until 7am  And his crate is kitted out with loads of comfort.....better than our bed

Carmel,Cheers for the email/advice.But i don't believe him to be bored he does'nt get the chance with us two  And he has more toys than you could shake a stick at.And loads of walks and runs :)

yes,he is crated while i go to work.....but not for long as i work shifts and my wife is there when i am on lates.

We have been told they like company ie: 2 whippets, maybe later??

He has "dry" food beta puppy.

The re-call training is going better and have taken yours/other peoples advice.

My wife is only training labs/gsd's/retrievers......can't see whippets making a guide dog though
