It's been a devastatingly sad 10 days here :(

My point to point race mare had her foal on 7th May - healthy and well.

10 days ago little Furby became ill and ended up on life support on Thursday last week. After 2 days the only kind thing to do was euthanase my lovely boy.

The lab reports showed a Salmonella infection which had progressed to septacaemia. His white blood cell count was 65 - that's 20 higher than ever known by my vets.

My vet did everything he could to save his life ..... apparently Furby was very, very unlucky to have got the infection.

Salmonella is zoonotic (it can infect any species) and the wet weather conditions have probably contributed to pasture becoming infected as the bacteria love that type of wet soil.

So please be aware of any animal or person, especially very young or elderly, who may seem a little off colour or has developed unexplained diarrhoea and get them checked out. Catching it early and administering antibiotics can save their life.

The video was taken when Furby was only 1 day old.

RIP Furby  (his racing registered name would have been Brook's Bay)

Poem by Tiffany Moss

~

His nostrils flare,

With noble delight,

His wide white eyes,

Full of fight.

He is a King,

With blood-red coat,

Charcoal hooves,

Upon wind he floats.

The breeze of heaven,

Flows through his mane,

He gallops through my heart,

And back again.

~

RIP Furbi :huggles: Gallop free....into the wind....

Thank you, everyone, for your sympathies :huggles:

I am bringing Rookie (Black A Brook), my mare, home tomorrow. She has been in quarantine in case she had salmonella too but she is fine and I don't want to leave her on her own anymore.

She will be here with my old shetland pony, Twiggy (39 this year!) and hopefully this will give her some comfort as she seems very depressed at the moment. :(

The one positive thing in all this is that I put Rookie in foal again to the same stallion (Relief Pitcher) in June, so Furby will have a little brother or sister in May next year, all being well.

I will update on her progress as time goes by.

I really do appreciate all the support I've had from K9 members - thanks again to all
