Nearby to Leigh cats and dogs home, stands a Maggot Farm. It's where fishing bait comes from. I'll give you three guesses as to where the flesh comes from, to breed the maggots on.

There is a protest being organised.... i've just copied this from another site... i thought someone might be interested..

I am trying to organise a protest this sunday at 1.00 at the front entrance of the leigh animal sanctuary---this protest is to get leigh to answer concerned owners as to the whereabouts of their greyhounds---owners who have taken greyhounds to leigh and paid for their greyhounds to be homed are anxious to know the whereabouts of their loved greyhounds--please if you are in this part of the countery support the protest.

The protest i have mentioned above is a protest from greyhound lovers who have put greyhounds in Leigh sanctuary in order to find them homes but with this recent news the owners are unsure if they were ever found homes...

i think its disgusting. they really ought to hang their heads in shame.if an owner has to part with a dog for any reason and is conscientious enough to go to a sanctuary where they think their beloved dog will get a chance of a kind loving home then this kennels is taking them under false pretences and they ought to be put out of business and sold to someone who has a better conscience than the present owners.i believe they are no longer taking greys to be put to sleep.ill try my best to get there on sunday as i want to protest at the present owners policy thats in place.i know the home ought to stay as theres lots of dogs that need places like this but not places where the dogs arent even given a chance of a life and are taken straight to the killing rooms. :(

** Just got this from another site quoting the protest is off...

Heres the post..

On the advice of sergeant Forest of leigh police sundays protest is cancelled---the police require notice for a protest and are stretched as the labour party conference is taking place---protest organisers could be held responsible for any problems that arise by not doing things properly---and as you know unlike the antis we in the greyhound community have respect for the law of the land---i am urging people tp bombard the leigh sanctuary with phone calls and letters of protest----on a note the antis greyhound action are protesting on saturday where once again we will be portrayed as uncaring people------well at least i tried---so get those calls/letters going in--its a start.

Today we attended a peaceful vigil at Leigh so called Animal Sanctuary. The turnout was amazing, because we were there tonight there are TWO whippets both under twelve months old safe in rescue. One 10mnth old boy was being handed in for euthanasia because he is a handful, the second is a 7mnth old bitch who cant be used for breeding and has luxating patellas in both back legs, the owners of this girl were more caring than the owners of the boy though I have to say. Also two cats were taken from owners to stop them entering and are now both safe.

Im just glad that we were there, the support was there and if it achieves nothing more four babies are tonight sleeping safe and sound.

There is still however another whippet ACTUALLY IN the sanctuary but the doors were locked today and we were denied access.

isnt this heart breaking, glad you saved 2 little whips & 2 catsjust hope the other whippet can be saved :(

Is the "Sanctuary" opening at all? I'm sure many of us nearby would like to get this whippie out.

our whippet was found in Leigh san, after gypsy's took him. But still donot agree to there methods. From Leigh

Well done for saving the two little whippies and the cats from that place. How anyone could think of handing in a baby whippet there is beyond me. I just wish all the animals already in there could be got out too.

Jools - I think they just closed for the day. I guess it's business as usual now.

she is beautiful  what about the little boy whippet?

Oh, she's so beautiful. Well done for getting them out!

I had a dog that did it's wrist and I took him to Leigh cats n dogs home and they put him to sleep for £35. No questions asked which suprised me. I hope they dont get hounded out of this or we will end up with greyhounds losing their ears and being left at roadsides by some people.

It's a very sad side to the sport

That little whippet bitch is gorgeous - glad she got out of there!!!

I agree totally ......its sad, but its better for unwanted Greyhounds and other dogs to be pts rather than to experince the other ways of dealing with them :( ........not that i'm saying Greyhound trainers/owners etc are like this, but theres always a few bad uns :(

Just finished reading all the pages of this thread. Well done to those who helped rescue the dogs and cats and to those caring people that took the trouble to demonstrate and protest outside this sad establishment.

just read this thread.

nauseating and depressing. I wish there was more publicity about this.

Thank god for people like Lisa and wonderful others who care so much and do so much good.

Sending prayers and love to all the animals.

wondering if anyone on here goes lamping with their whippets and lurchers ?

I'm not entirely clear why this is relevant. I'm guessing (sorry if I'm wrong) that you are saying there is some hypocrisy in people being prepared to hunt, but objecting to other animals, eg greyhounds, being killed?

Of course you are right in one way, everyone has to make their own choices as to what they consider acceptable. I'm not a vegetarian, so I accept that if I eat meat farm animals are being killed to provide it. On the other hand I personally don't consider it is OK for dogs to be killed in order to provide 'sport' in the form of greyhound racing. That may not be logical, but that is my 'line in the sand'.

I think the main hypocrisy I object to is that people are lied to about what really happens to greyhounds. If you listen to the industry you'd believe that racing dogs have a wonderful few years charging about then all go off to loving homes to live the life of riley on someone's sofa. The reality is very different for some - and probably most - greyhounds; there are far more bred than could ever realistically be homed so the surplus have to be disposed of by places like Leigh and people like the man in Durham.

Everybody has the right to decide whether they want to support racing or not, but they have the right to make that decision based on facts, not propaganda.
