Should dogs be allowed on beaches?

I believe yes because they are part of the family and most dogs love to swim and be in company of other dogs, and owners. But I can understand why people/councils don’t allow it. Because when you see in the street the irresponsible owners not picking up there dog poo (Many of times have I seen this), or allowing there dog to fight (I have also seen this), and when people walk around the beach with no shoes on they could very well stand in poo or wee. There could also be some controversy on this topic because dogs could scare children and end up with the dog biting a young child. Also some people are allergic to dogs and may fine the owner of the dog who gave the person allergic reaction. All in all my answer is YES dogs should be allowed on all beaches free of charge, all year round!

The obvious answer to me is that we should have some dog-friendly beaches and some where dogs are not permitted - or at least not in warmer weather. Not all people who take their dogs on beaches are responsible and I would have hated my children to have 'found' a dog poo while digging in the sand, or a dog come running over trying to get our ice creams.

So even though there's beaches I'd like to take Jasper on and can't, and it limits where we can go in the summer (particularly as Jasper hates walking on pebbles), I'm happy with the situation we have now.

okay fair comment.

I LOVE dog friendly beaches! but agree with @JudyN that some need should stay no dogs for the humans that don't appreciate lots of dogs running around!

I find most beaches allow dogs after September and before May which avoids all the busy periods anyway!

We live 20 minutes from Weston-Super-Mare and it has a great beach. It has a dog friendly section for all year round

Harri had a great time playing at Weston last Friday. He loved it. My own nerves have yet to recover.....

I echo what others have said - yes, subject to the restrictions mentioned. Some Local Authorities near me are starting to ban dogs from fields as owners fail to pick up and when people play football, well you can work it out.... I still can't grasp why some people just do not pick up after their dogs :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Ah so close to us @Caro Perry :) I'm guessing he rather enjoyed the big open space!??

Yes his first time there - although I'm only about 25 miles away! There were too many dogs for him to run free as he'd have been out of sight in seconds. Even so he insisted on meeting and greeting every dog he could see, snaffling up dropped food and trying to chase the crows.

I think the beach restrictions are a fair compromise. Most beaches in North Wales have some areas restricted but there is no difficulty in finding beaches for your dog even in the May - Sept period.
