Should We Get A 2nd Dog??

we have an 18mth old boy (Rambo) who we love, he is affectionate and very funny and entertaining. We often wonder about getting another whippet but worry he would lose his personality, Is this so and does anyone have any positives or negatives of owning two whippets.

Rambo is gorgeous :wub: I have to say I always intended to have two whippets, but personal circumstances intervened and I didn't get my second until my boy, Rifle was almost 5. I haven't regretted it at all, even though initially Rosie, as a rescue, and only 17 months old had a lot of issues (she wasn't house trained, suffered severe separation anxiety etc). Rifle loves having another whippet to snuggle with and to play with. He'd always had other canine company but a game of chase is SO much more fun with a playmate who can equal your speed. I don't think there is much chance of him losing his personailty, you'll just see different facets to it as he interacts with another whippet.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do, but I certainly wouldn't ever be a single whippet family again

WOW he is stunning (w00t)

Very similar to my Bo in markings and colour (She is 8 months old). we got her as a Puppy

We got our 2nd 4 weeks ago (Mya 2 Year old Brindle) and I havent looked back - If anything Mya has brought out a very special side in Bo and they are inseperable now, cant imagine life without them

They each have alot of laps to chose from as there are 6 of us in our house.

We had Bobby (Collie X) who was 5 when we got Dolly as a puppy. After a few years I eventually persuaded OH to get a second whippet and Remmy came to live with us (she was 10 months old). All 3 dogs get on well, but there is a special bond between the 2 whippets. :wub: :wub: They nearly always share the same bed and always sleep together at night. Bobby prefers his own space.

I put this photo on another thread recently.

I would always have 2 whippets, and even OH thinks the same now. :huggles: Also I don't think having two is actually any harder then having one, although a bit more costly.

Rambo looks really gorgeous.

I am sure that Rambo would be delighted to have a whippet companion.

Someone to snuggle up to, a running mate, company if you are out etc.

You may have to share the affection that is presently given solely to yourselves and he may become quieter and more relaxed in the house but he will quiten down as he gets older anyway. Toddy has really settled down since he turned 2.

Toddy has lost none of his exuberant personality being one in a pack of 5 but he is much calmer for their presence and always suggled up next to his best friend Lilly.

That is when he is not winding her up for her to move off what he considers must be the best place to sleep as she was there first :wacko:

Toddy and Lilly are both rescue dogs and quite highly strung and nervy and they gain a lot of confidence from being together.

Have you considered getting an older (1+) speyed rescue bitch?

Rambo may be more accepting of a lady in his life rather than having to play second fiddle to a younger or more dominant dog which could just alter his personality.

Women can be bossy (like my Lilly & little Daisy) but menfolk do not seem to mind being manipulated by womenfolk

Whippets do seem to prefer their own kind and someone to share a bed with. I would not say that two are more work than one, if anything, less but they are double the cost and double the amount of poop scooping :lol: .

Like others have said, i don't think you'd regret getting a second Whippet. 18 months is a good age to start looking for a new addition / getting yourself on a waiting list, as your boy will have a close bond with you and all training issues etc will have been dealt with.

There is something very special about seeing the bond that two Whippets have - they absolutely adore their own kind.

Just beware I started off with one dog after joining K9...and now i have four... :lol:

and btw all mine are males and get along really well, Im sure if you do your homework and introduce your puppy properley to Rambo

you shouldnt have a problem.

Another beautiful blue :wub: Also another Dotty look alike except for the obvious (dangly bit :teehee: ). We got a second, Duke, when Dotty was about 9 months old best thing we ever did! :thumbsup: Only one problem 2 is never enough cos whippits are way to cute and very addictive. I'm working on the OH for number 3. i have to say if you've got 2 they are really good company for one another. )

After all as I tell him indoors frequently, they fold up ever so small. You can easily get 6 on an average sized sofa. They certainly motivate each other to exercise with more enthusiasm as well . Yey! You won't regret it, just take your time and find the right little one to join your family, I didn't mean to get a second whippet, it just happened and they are so happy together, and I've lost none of the relationship with my first whippet

That was just a useful side affect !! But he's still telling the tale of how we invited a pack of dogs round and they all just curled up beautifully .......and he's a cat man. So that's a true testimony to the merits of whippets . More the merrier !!!
