Whilst I appreciate and understand the need for quarantine regulations, and that we are not just testing for rabies, it is still in many cases a beaurocracy and money making concern.
Australian dogs walk off the plane in most countries, except the UK.
I have exported to two different countries without any problems but am about to export to a third and find that some of the tests and time restrictions required are ridiculous. We had to have a difficult blood test for a parasite THAT ISN"T IN AUSTRALIA! Now tell me that makes sense. And, the test is ony done twice a week, the other side of the country and naturally, isn't cheap. Even the vets I went to don't like or agree that the test is necessary as Ivermectin and Frontline would treat the parasite if present and they have to treat with these products for the export anyway. And my transport agent has informed us that the Govt Vet at the receiving end can be difficult.
Some exports and imports are seamless; others mind boggling. Chatting about this topic last night with friends at dinner, my girlfriend commented how her export landed late into Sweden so the vet charged $800 Aust to clear the dog on a Saturday. Wish I earnt that much for half an hours work!
I tend to think some quarantine bodies don't seem to be keeping abreast with modern vaccination protocols and titre testing. I will concede it is getting better as when we started in RR's, importing a dog took 15 months from Rhodesia. It's slowly been reduced over time. There were lots of dogs on pet passports at Crufts and The World Dog Show. But the wheels of governments are slow to turn.
Cheers
