I lost my precious 8 year old girl last night after 24 hours of fits which the vet was unable to stabalise. Absolutely heartbroken and stunned - has anyone ever heard of a similar tragedy?

We were out for a lovely walk and she just went into a massive fit and despite vetinary treatment within 10 minutes she continued both cluster and massive fits for 24 hours after which I couldn't bare her agony anymore and we put her to sleep.

The vet originally suspected anaphalactic shock from a sting, but rulled this out as she did not stablaise, so no real idea what happened and the only other course of action was to send her away for MRI scans, but she was screaming with fear and confusion and I just couldn't do it to her.

So sad today, I miss her dreadfully.
 
What an awful experience for you. I am so very sorry this happened to your lovely girl. You must be devastated.

I have no knowledge in this area but there must be plenty of information about seizures in dogs or even canine epilepsy on the internet.

Sometimes things happen which we could never anticipate and have no control over.

You did the right thing for her and she was clearly very much loved.

I am so sorry, what a tragic thing to happen and I cannot begin to understand how you are feeling but you know you have done the right and brave thing for your precious girl :huggles: Hopefully the vet or some one on here can offer you some advice on what may have been the cause and put your mind at rest a little.

Oh how heartbreaking for you, im so very sorry RIP little one You did everything you could ,sometimes it just isnt meant to be

I feel so sad and upset for you, the shock losing your whippet this way must be terrible. Sorry, I can't throw any light on the problem I'm afraid. Rest in Peace little girl.
 
Thanks for the kind words, I guess in the end the reason doesn't make any difference, its just so hard to come to terms with and I do miss her.

Ive not been on this forum for ages - but I knew you guys would understand.

What tragic news but I am sure you did the right thing by her. Was it Sadie that you lost? None of Fleurs puppies have suffered in this way and as far as I am aware, apart from the one that was lost in a tragic car accident, all are still going strong (as is Fleur).

However I did lose a whippet in a similar way some years ago. No relation at all to Fleur.

I took Ella for a walk and half way round she collapsed and fitted. I took her to the vet and they sedated her but every time she began to come out of the sedation she fitted again so, sadly I decided to put her down. The vet had no idea what caused the problem.

My thoughts are with you at this sad time but I know that she had a very happy life with you and I thank you for that.

So very sorry, it must have been devastating and a horrible shock. Do dogs get brain tumours? I know they can cause fits in humans. Thinking of you in your sad loss :huggles:
 
Hi Debbie -thanks so much for replying, I'd lost your contact deatils but thought you might see this. Yes it was Sadie - she has been the most wonderful member of the family and my son will be as heart broken as I am - he is away in France so I won'te tell him until he gets home.

It sounds as if Ella died just the same way as Sadie - how tragic. I just keep trying to think of her at peace, she seemed to just relax in my arms just before the vet injected her and was her old self just for a few seconds.

I'm so glad Fleur and the rest of the 'pups' are still going strong - how old is Fleur now?

Sadie had just come back from the most amazong holiday with us - we took her (and our Welsh Springer) around the Hebrides in our old camper for 3 weeks. She was so happy - chasing the oyster catchers and rabbits all day and burrowed into my son's sleeping bag every night, with us all the time and just being herself. I'm so grateful we had that time togehter just before the end.

I'll try and work out how to upload some photos of her.

That brought back tragic memories. I lost my beloved Badger, Rystone the Raven like that. He was not quite three. He had a massive fit, it was dreadful. I took him to the vet obviously. He had stopped fitting by then. We left him there as he had lost the use of his right front leg, and the prognosis was poor. The next morning there was no change and he was just not right. I asked the vet to put him to sleep as he was just not recovering. The PM revealed a brain tumour. So I at least I knew the reason for the fits and change in behaviour.

I feel so sorry for you, it seems so cruel to loose a dog young.

Just seen your post and photos, my boy was also black. I was heartbroken when I lost him.

Everyone has already said it but I too am so sorry for what you and your darling girl had to go through. It's an owners nightmare. Your photos made me cry seeing her being loved and then knowing what happened. You have my sympathy in the loss of your beautiful girl.

At least your son was not present at the time.

I lost my dog who was a similar age with an aortic thromboembolism.

The fear, confusion and pain is heartbreaking to see and such a sudden unexpected loss, very hard to cope with.

I know how you must be feeling right now and my heart goes out to you. :'( :'( :'(

So sorry to hear of your loss. I had a bitch that had constant fits like that, we got her to the vet who referred her to the Glasgow Vet College to see a neurologist, but sadly she died before getting the MRI brain scan, but she was diagnosed with a brain tumour, for which they said there was no treatment. I remember well how traumatic it all was, it came on so suddenly too. She seemed a bit strange at 8am and had died by 10pm.
