a debate has risen on another board, about the accuracy/inaccuracy of greyhounds porteyed in a movie hunting wild boar.

now, I think it highly unlikely - it is a big powerful animal - surely a greyhound can't just take it down and it wouldn't run away either to be chased and tired out.

and then I started to think about salukis and gazelles - I read that the saluki would run it down and the huntsmen then take care of it. or does it actually kill it?

and what about the russian wolfhound? how did they hunt the wolves?

have had no luck finding information online.

I don't know what it is they caught, but it certainly isn't a wolf - a fox or coyote maybe?

Not a clean kill at all, not pleasant to watch :(

At least before fox hunting was banned the fox was killed quickly.

Do you mean the Borzoi? They were used to hunt wolves in Russia. Saluki or Sloughi could bring down a gazelle. A whippet or two can bring down a deer too, not a red deer but certainly a roe.

Boar are hunted until they turn and stand, then they are speared by the huntsman. I think.

yes. I was rather wondering about the technique - how did they kill it?

see, with the boar, from what I know - it wouldn't run away, especially if caught with their young (though as I recall you are not allowed to hunt them during breeding by law), it is quite likely it would stand its ground and fight.

In boarhunting there are what they call bailer dogs ( dogs that bark ) and they have dogs that will hold (run in and grab a hold of the boar )Then the hunters come and shoot it (the Boar)or bleed it .The dogs and their Boar can be miles away when the chase ends, so telemetry is used to locate them .

Hello, this is a rather long, but very good read of boar/wild pig hunting in Oz using dogs. But the dogs are not sighthounds but i imagine same principal applies.

From that link i tried to post the boars or wild pigs as a lot of them are in oz are held by the dog, or kept bussy at least, usually by the nose/ear, the dodgy end then the human comes in flips it on its side and sticks it with a knife, there classed a vermin in oz i believe so no close season, not many rules really i dont think, and i cant imagine it can be that pleasant for it.

Dont know whatb else to say cept thanx very much for acknowledgment ? lol
