yes so do I, my point is these look to be more about show than go which is to my eyes a shame as you can have both if the selection process and foundation stock is different. I am only going on photos though and a not particularly high opinion of the working qualities of the modern borzoi.

You should learn more about silkens RM before issuing such statements  :D The breeds founder is very well known for her performance borzois, making up a great many lure coursing and racing champions as well as hunting on a large ranch. The reason she started down the silken road was to create a smaller hound that was still hardy enough to travel by the side of their horses for a whole day or two. Silkens all over the world compete in flat racing and lure coursing and this ability is important to the silken breeders. They may be incredibly pretty, but that doesn't stop them running :)

And as to your other comment about the working qualities of the modern borzoi, I can't help wondering how much research you've put into this comment too? You have to remember what borzois where bred for, for chasing and holding wolves, I believe that every one of the 15 borzoi I've owned could still have done that job. My 9 1/2 year old boy is still very keen as anyone who has seen him running at Kincardine will tell you. He doesn't have a great temperament for modern day society but it is probably the temperament that was required back in the czars day! No, you probably won't find a borzoi that will retrieve rabbits to hand if that's your definition of working, but most will still hunt (and I do mean hunt rather than just chase).

Borzoi are quite capable to rabbiting and can bring back rabbits live to hand, ask Raiye

about Mims.

You have to remember what borzois where bred for, for chasing and holding wolves,QUOTE i don't want an argument but Borzois were regarded as effete before the Russian revolution if you think a modern show borzoi could pull down a wolf you are mistaken. I haven't seen any of these silken wolfhounds oin the flesh which is why I say they don't look that athletic rather than being categorical about it but I would bet a lot of money that a creation using non ped working types would produce superior stock I am reminded off a conversation I once had at crufts with a show greyhound owner who claimed her dogs were the equal of track blood for speed, anyone who knows dogs knows they aren't and anyone with an experinced eye can tell that by looking at them.

You have to remember aswell that borzois were never used singley(sp)

they was always used in 3's, two to run either side of the wolf and the other to bate at the back,

the dogs were used to effectivly trip the wolf up and then to hold it.

If you do a search on youtube, you will find a vid that shows wolf coursing in russia

as it does still happen today, although the wolfs are effectivly pet wolfs,

theres quite a few other vids of borzois hunting aswell.

I agree completely, but my comment was really aimed at the people who would want to go out rabbiting at night and expect their hound to retrieve 20 bunnies. A borzoi would not be in to that at all, or at least none of mine would. They might bring one back but they'd settle down to eat the 2nd one :D All my borzois have been very capable hunters, and to see them work together to turn rabbits etc away from fencelines is amazing.

Mims must be the exception then, as she will work as long as you have her out,

she brings them all back, she retrives anything that you ask her to.

A big thank you to the mods for restoring this thread, and cleaning it up ;)

Thought it might be time for a silken update as I met Millys little brother at the SKC at the weekend, he's a year old now and looks like this....

For the poster who thought that silkens were all 'show not go' there was a lure coursing derby in Finland at the weekend, 200 dogs took part (17 breeds) and the highest scoring dog was a silken windhound  Keva Double M was Best in field over whippets, salukis and other sighthounds ;)

Milly's brother is stunning!!

I am so taken by this breed - they are amazing and I think I may well look into getting a silken windhound of my own one of these days

Ive had the pleasure of meeting both of these beautiful dogs. Im extremely taken by them too.

Now I know this may not be a great racing clip, but there are masses of clips of silkens racing really well on the net - I like this girl for her alternate version of hunting the lure :- ) :- )

- watch through to her second go.
