Had a heart wrenching call from my girlfriend who has just exported a 1yr old english pointer from NZ to the USA.

An airport chappy took the dog out of the crate for him to have a wee & he apparently slipped his collar & has not been seen since.

They have called in tracker dogs who can't pick up a scent, they have launched an Animal Alert where there is media coverage, Police, Detectives, Fire brigade, Tacker dogs and all the Airport Security. A load of Pointer people are there at present and also one with an in Season bitch all out looking for him.

We are so far away & it seems that they are doing everything in their power to find Spencer, I was just hoping that by placing this on our list, there may be some suggestions someone can offer in the bid to find this precious boy.

He has been missing now for 2 days, it is freezing & miserable up where he is, he has come from our warm summer, so I am praying he is found soon, a pointer like a whippet do not fare well in extreme conditions :(

OMG really hope he's found really soon :huggles: Thinking of you all at this worrying time xxx

That's terrible! Surely they should know better that to put any animal in an area where a situation where this could happen, you must be furious

Hope they find the poor lad soon :luck:

THE BEST CHRISTMAS NEWS YET....

Spencer has JUST been found!! He must have been hiding in the cargo area where they were not allowed access to, something happened & he got spooked & ended up running along the runway!

They had cars trying to run him off the runway as a plane was due to land & thank god my girlfriends 16yr old daughter who had flown to USA to meet him originally was there as she was able to catch him.

The media had arrived & have footage of it all & it will be on the US news tonite, I can't tell you how exciting it was to get the phone call just minutes ago, lots of tears of joy & relief have been shed I can tell you!

He is now heading to a 5 star hotel where he will be able to catch up on some well deserved cuddles from his new owners - he is in a bit of a state as you can imagine a dog missing for 2 days in a foreign country would be, but he will be fine.

The nightmare is over - this is the best news ever :huggles:

You must be sooooooooooo relieved, happy, over joyed, tearful - FANTASTIC news  Safe and sound for christmas too :huggles:

Thank goodness !! Bet thats the best Xmas pressie ever

THis is really amazing that they found him. I assume most of you heard of the Westminster Whippet bred by Bo Bengston who got loose at the airport in New York and was never found. :(

They are supposed to only open those crates in a closed room in order to feed or exercise a dog. Someone really screwed up.

Oh I am so pleased he's safe. The poor boy must have been terrified. Patsy

My heart was in my mouth starting to read this thread and then the flood of relief to read he is found.

Remembering Vivi and other horror stories I have heard just fills me with dread.

This is was one of my darkest fears every time I fly a dog anywhere. And direct contact with freight people directly responsible at airports is becoming less and less possible - it only adds to my stress.

I am so glad they have him back.

So glad he's found.

I sent a whippet to Tasmania and he got loose when the new owners collected him, but was found several hours later. Also know of an RR that got out in Changi Airport Singapore en route to Italy and was found several days later but that was many years ago when crates weren't as secure as they are now.

In my experience, when a dog gets out in an unfamiliar area, they generally go to ground and stay close by to where they got out. I know that doesn't happen in all circumstances but in all where I've been involved in or a friend has, the dogs have been very close to where they went from.

This sounds like an unusual scenario that an airport worker would get a dog out of a crate as here in Oz, any departing animal, whether domestic or international, crates are generally cable tied up and the ties are cut when the owner or agent comes to collect the dog. For long haul flights or where flights are delayed or missed, the dogs are only removed from crates in the secure quarantine areas.

But in the long run, and certainly a Merry Christmas for this very lucky boy.

Have only just seen this, so glad he got found, what a rollercoaster.

Bet he's being spoilt rotten now

Wonderful news

It is unbelievable that anybody would let a dog out of a crate in open area in the airport; there would be all sort of security implications.

But it seems to happen more often lately, there was Fern missing for 2 days in Melbourne airport on her way to NZ and i heard about GSD escaping somewhere in Queensland. Surely it is not too much to ask to expect to train staff not to open a crate unless in totally enclosed SMALL area?

Spencer's crate was cable tied by the agents here in NZ - it has been an awful experience for his breeders/new owners.

The strange thing is that his new owners were at the airport & were waiting for him to be released - what possessed the airport guy to let him out for a wee is still unclear.

I guess you can have all the procedures in the world set in place - sadly they don't always get followed & this is how these situations occur. I know myself I have collected dogs I have imported & the staff have passed comment on how cute the dog was & how good it was when they took it out to the toilet!

I has been a massive roller coaster ride and I am thrilled it is over with such a positive outcome - my thoughts when I was first rung by my friend flicked back to the terrible tragedy of the Bohem bitch, hence my listing a lost pointer on a whippet list, I thought we may have been able to draw on the experience & have other ways of tracking him down, but thank God he is now safe & sound.

Still feel quite tearful thinking about it, he is such a lovely boy and it is a wee adventure that we could have done without - 2 days missing is a lifetime when you are at the other end of the world.

So pleased hes with his new owners, now , safe and sound

I cant imagine what you must have gone through

What a bunch of thickheads. You'd think the airport people would learn after the vivi tragedy in New York.

Had a link to the snippet on the US news tonite, the airline have offered to pay the the airfare to Boston plus some 5 star accommodation, etc & will be talking to their staff.

A nice little video clip of Spencer, Paige (from NZ) and his new owners - there was definately a little christmas fairy looking out for this boy
