Just went for the weekly toe check at the vets and bumped into someone with a whippet, who looked very familiar, who turned out to be Sharon Ireland, who is familar from BSFA and the Hillsprint. She'd come all the way from Sussex to bring one of her dogs to have an op. on her tendon. Hope she is ok :luck: (big congrats to Shandril Moondance for winning BIF at the last BSFA  )

Still don't know how well Gelerts toe will heal. It looked fine until yesterday, but has suddenly started swelling and sticking out a bit. Although the disclocated/broken joint is apparently well stabilised, there is apparently a lot of fibrous scar tissue which isn't stable yet and is moving the toe around. Until this settles we won't really know how good a mend it will be, and although the vet seems pretty hopeful that it will do well, it may still have to come off if it starts giving him pain.

He's happy in himself, although not terribly happy about strict lead only, short grass walking which we need to do for the next six weeks.

I'm going to trip you up if you don't bathe my foot as well ...

Awww another 6 weeks of lead walking :(

Poor Gelert and poor you as it must be like living with a coiled spring. (w00t) Atleast in 6 weeks the summer will be here and he can have a lovely summer with his newly healed toe :luck:

molly my greyhound cross, had the same problem when she was 3 years old.

she is nine now and throughout the last 6 years she must have redamage her toe at least 4 times since she first did it.

but saying that she is a big girl ,very weighty,so a lot more pressure is applied when she runs and stops.

it does not bother her anymore and the joint will always be twice the size of the others.

we use to rest her for weeks at a time and as soon as she was let off the lead ,any fast running ,she would start limping again and was in pain.

it could be easier for a whippet, been lighter in weight,so fingers crossed gelerts toe is better soon.

It will be worth it in the end - a perfect toe again Gelert. Glad to hear things are on the mend and nice pictures too. He is very handsome

:huggles: as ever to the gorgeous Gelert. Maybe we could go for a walk together where they ALL have to be on a lead? He would probably like to see his harreem again.

Hope Gelert makes a full recovery :luck: :luck: - and say hello to Sharon from me if you see her there again!!

Wow- he really did a thorough job on that toe didn't he, the naughty boy?!

Hope he can contain himself on his lead walks and ends up with a perfect toe again! :luck:

Gelert thanks everyone for their kind thoughts. :D

We probably will bump into them again Zephyr, as poor Sharon is having to come back weekly for checks too. It sounded like a very bad tendon injury unfortunately :(

He can contain himself very well; in fact he absolutely refuses to relieve himself whilst on a lead. :b  'Walks' are a real battle of wills as he refuses to actually walk; he digs his heals in then bounds ahead, trying to make a point about proper whippety outings involving running I think :- " He is a little o:) in the house, sits patiently without a complaint (though having possession of the cat's favourite warm spot in the conservatory might have something to do with it :b  )

I don't know when we can have a proper walk Oliva, he's not supposed to do it for more than 10 mins max, and then only on very even grass, so we end up driving him to the end of the road, then carrying him over the gravel and ruts to the better grass a couple of times a day. The '6 weeks' just seems to keep getting longer too (w00t)

Sorry to hear about Molly, such a shame for something like this to happen to a young dog :(

Our best wishes to Gelert  It really is a long job :(

Hope you are ok too
