Its hard i know, i smoked aound 40 a day for 30 years but with allthe bans coming in i thought id try.

Couldn't believe it when the days went into months. Never thought

id last this long. I even used to wake up during the night for a smoke

I never moan at smokers, i was one for a long time and i admit i

would still like one now. I just hope i have enough willpower to

stay away from them for good

Ann, I've just worked out how much you would've spent had you continued smoking for another 10years Well done again

I know its loads, when i started i had this little thingy which would pop up

when i turned on my pc it told me, how long, how many and how much.

But when my son upgraded my pc earlier this year i forgot to save it and

i dont know where i got it in the first place...........

I don't know if this bothers any of you, but when I go for a dog walk I like to be out in the FRESH air.  More and more I am noticing people going for a walk in lovely countryside only to be SMOKING.  It is horrible to walk behind these people as the air absolutely stinks.  I dread to think what the smoke does for their dogs.
Wondered if the new non-smoking laws will protect the air on dog walks?

WOT A LOAD OF TOSH

Well said unwanted (w00t)

If absolutely no-one smoked all the money from tax that the government would lose would be equalled by not having to treat all the smoke induced ill health !
the same goes for all other alcohol/drug induced ill health that has to be treated on the overstretched and often abused NHS

Well, I'd like to think you were right on this.

However, I am not sure that the one form of income is balanced by the expenditure.

For example, look at all the tax burden placed on motorists, and yet only a fraction of the revenue collected is actually spent on maintaining the road infrastructure.

Government budgeting is not quite as straightforward as "all money collected on cigarettes goes towards paying for the NHS".

However the revenue raised from, say, sale of cigarettes and motoring taxes, certainly goes a long way to propping up the govt budget for whatever else they have in mind to spend it on.

If we take it to its furthest extreme, say for instance if every single person adopted a healthy lifestyle, did not smoke, drink, take drugs etc, ate healthily and exercised enough, and people lived for far longer, then they would still cost the NHS and Social Services money - it would just be spent on treating different diseases/illnesses, degeneration caused by old age, wouldn't it?

Do you know what George, this may be a first but I totally agree with you  yes I am a smoker but if I gave up tomorrow I wouldn't tell the world that they couldn't

When the smoking ban comes in and people stop the government loses loads of money and your taxes go up I suppose that will be our fault too

I for one pay national insurance and have done all my life so I pay for my own care, and so far I think I'm in credit by quite a lot

I also pay plenty of taxes which help to keep the council run countryside walks so if I want to smoke there I will :)

Anyway lets shoot all the smokers, obese people, and anyone else who needs healthcare for doing something ,people who drive cars, use aresols, don't recycle ect ect

What a perfect world this is going to be :D

Perfect but empty

Just like to make it clear I am not saying people shouldn't smoke but I do believe smokers should not inflict their smoke on non-smokers whether it be inside or out. Maybe there should be specific smoking areas just like beaches have specific doggie areas.

yes, the equation is never that simple, as everything else in life ... even to the extremes of just how 'nothing' are we mere mortals compared to the whole universe, which is a question I never waste much time pondering about because I believe it is all relevant and you can honestly only send ripples out to a certain distance from your own little centre of the universe.

I ususally keep my posts to 'aww how cute are those puppies' etc because I can't be doing with getting involved in deep differing opinions, I know to some people on here that is just the sport they love.

No I haven't been on the sherry and BTW (I always store titbits of info such as this :- " ) don't overdo the hairspray when you're flying on holiday..... I never forget the witness account of the horrendous fire on a plane in Manchester about 23 yrs ago who said the woman in front of him (who'd obviously been to the hairdressers for her trip) had her head go up in flames due to the hairspray.

Chill out everyone, no one's perfect ( I guess some are just less imperfect than the others  )

I agree with banning smoking in public places though, I dont think its fair you should inflict your smoking habit on other peeps,...I.e smoke wafting their way! and i dont smoke in restaurants when people are eating either. , and i dont smoke inside at home , Only in the garden :) I cant see whats wrong with smoking when you outside in the countryside though  We went to sherwood forest yest day BTW and sat in the outside cafe area - you say peeps where smoking at a table near you ( sorry, cant remember who posted this) but they shouldnt of been - i noticed a no smoking sign in the cafe area

Well, all the very best of luck to you Lisa  It's not easy but crikey it feels good once you've cracked it

It was me who said about the smoking outside in the cafe area in Sherwood Forest and I never noticed a sign..it was outside so I presumed they could. It was bloody disgusting..we'd sat down an ordered then they lit up :x :x I find that when I've politely asked people to refrain in the past, they usually get aggressive and defensive..so I don't bother with them now...but my children hate it :(

I know Annsa on here has given up and has some great tips ... :)

I have to say, smoking has never really bothered me (although I would prefer not to be smoked over when I'm eating!), but my husband has smoked for years and years and years ...

Anyway! He gave up smoking in January 2006 (it was his own decision!) and I am very proud of him that he has stayed off the ciggies (not least because it means more money to spend on whippet leads, whippet collars, whippet coats, etc etc :- " )

However, when we go in pubs now, he says he never realised before what pubs smell like, ie, vomit etc! That's cos he smoked since he was very young and had less of a sense of smell as a smoker.

:D :D :D
