Amazing photos Nicola. I love the Western Isles, although haven't been to Harris. One of the best holidays I've had was a trip to Mull, Iona and Staffa. The beaches are stunning.

We're driving up to Scotland in two weeks time and I'm even more excited now!!!!! :D

We were right next to the sea, and no enclosed garden , so it wouldn't have been dog friendly really....The locals are still very religious and won't partake in any activities on a Sunday (no games, hanging out washing...you  name it...I actually approve of the no shops open bit etc). They ask visitors to respect their Sunday rules too.
Thanks for the info  Yes, I think it would be a dog-free holiday if Neil and I did go. The travelling would be no problem as Tina is so laid back she just crashes out asleep on the back seat :p and I think we would break the journey up a few times. But I think the main thing putting me off would be the livestock all over the place

I think Harris is definitely gong to be a walking & birdwatching holiday for us :D

I'd heard a few of the Scottish Islands were still pretty religious and did nothing on a Sunday - I imagine it would be really nice after the 'normal' 24/7 lifestyle of the mainland :D

Breathtaking photos Nicola  I particularly like the window shot, (excellent exposure) the bay, the boat, the standing stones and the slow shutter speed you've used on the beach. I definately think you should get them on a stock photo site

We went to Mull last year (but we didn't visit Staffa). It was lovely. We underestimated how much there was to see...there's so much we didn't get time to see, that we're going to go back! Enjoy your hols

It was lovely...a real escape from it all. It was so quiet on the Sunday, we weren't even sure if we were supposed to drive or go for a walk. :p We did risk it, and only saw one other couple out walking.

Are you keen birdwatchers? It's a small ambition of mine to get a good close up photo of an oystercatcher (and puffins too...but I'll have to wait for that). They're common enough on the Islands....but you can't get anywhere near them without them taking fright and screaming at you.

Yep..loads of these about (and lambs all over the place):

Thanks Jac...I feel really pleased you think they're good. I probably should look at these photo sites...my main aim was to have a few for next year's camera club competitions.

Wonderful scenery Nicola... some amazing photos in there.

My OH goes up there about twice a year with his work, he says how was your boat trip?? :sweating:

Id love the scenery and taking the photos....but slightly too isolated for me too...

I'm glad you had such a good holiday Nicola, and thanks so much for sharing those beautiful photos with us.

I could feel the calm washing over me as I looked at them.

It's made me look forward to our Scottish holiday this summer, even more (even if we will get midges!).

Thanks Nicola.

Fantastic photos! We were up in Inverfarigaig on the south side of Loch Ness last week - we had fantastic weather too. Not as remote as Harris but still pretty quiet.

I actually used to live on Benbecula in the early 80's when I had just started nursery school and mum used to have to hang on to me when walking me to school because the winds were strong enough to blow you away in the winter.

I'd like to take Max and Tiny to the Western Isles - we went for a day trip to Skye last summer from Black Isle, but I don't think they'd like being on a boat. They actually got car sick last week for the first time ever. :x

Can't wait now till late July when we are off to the Ardnamurchan peninsula, and we will be exploring Mull and other islands too.  Also staying the Lakes for a couple of days on the way up, and coming home via Edinburgh, Northumerland, Durham and Yorkshire.  :)   It's a proper road trip, so we won't be taking Zephyr as there would be too much time in the car and it's just not safe, so that's a shame.  :(   But he gets to stay with some gorgeous whippet girls, so I don't think he'll really mind that much! :*

I'm sure Zephyr will have a whale of a time with his girlfriends. You certainly are doing a lot of travelling, taking in all the best bits. Quite a whirlwind holiday, but it sounds like fun!

Our outbound ferry journey across the Minch was great. It was one of the days where there wasn't a breath of wind and the sea was like a millpond. Returning, it was quite windy and a bit choppy. :x

Sorry if i was a bit negative about the midges. Mainly memories from our camping days in Scotland. You can't get away from them when you're camping. I'm sure you'll have a lovely time.

We camped at Benbecula two/three years ago, when we visited the Uists (which we loved as well). Was your dad in the army up there? They have a missiles base there...we could hear the rockets being detonated at regular intervals through the week. It didn't bother the wildlife at all, they were so used it

Sorry to keep resurrecting my post...... :b

That's just what I was thinking Nicola - it's obviously the 'in' place this year! ;) :D Can't wait now for our own visit.

ohhh - if you are all heading to the Highlands you can pop in for a cup of tea with us :)

we are lucky enough to live on the North East Coast - spectacular beaches, fantastic walks, wildlife and scenery, huge and endless skies, peace and quiet and dryer than the West Coast - and most importantly less midges than the West

also we do have lots and lots of green fields and forests - so it is not all grey, wet and bleak as lots of folk imagine NE Scotland to be.

we have been here for only nine months and i can honestly say that i could not live anywhere else -

life way up here is good :D

I believe you..honestly! We must get up your way one year... We've often considered moving to Scotland to get away from overcrowded England, and to live close to the hills and moors and open spaces. It's just having to make friends all over again and not being able to see family easily that stops us really.

Our original plan was to go to NE Scotland but somehow we have ended up going to Kintyre & Arran instead! But we don't know the NE (although we went to Inverness once to visit my OH's aunt) so it is still on our list of areas to visit. We'd love to go to Orkney as well. :)

Just looked at your pictures and how nice they all are. The location for your holiday looks stunning with awesome scenery. We have never been to that area but you, with your pictures, have definitely put Harris on our most beautiful list. The standing stones pics were really good. The hills were amazing. Thanks for showing

just keep driving North of Inverness - then it really is so pretty.

the boat to Orkney is only a short trip away from my home - i never thought that i would be able to go on day trips to Orkney whenever i fancied!

hope you make it up this far one day x

we have found it really easy to make friends up here - living in such small communities seems to make folk realise how important neighbours actually are

as for leaving friends and family .... that has been really hard :(

but they love the free holidays :D
