SHOCKED staff at an animal shelter arrived at work to find a starving dog shut in a tiny box left outside the gates.
The “extremely emaciated” flea-bitten two to three-year-old lurcher had been left in what has been described as a “terrible” condition in the tea chest.
Charlotte, as she has been named, was discovered yesterday and was so ill she could barely stand.
Staff at the Wood Green Animal Shelter, in Godmanchester, near Huntingdon, immediately put her on a drip and found she had a heart murmur.
They are now running further tests on her to assess her condition fully.
The animal welfare charity is appealing for witnesses who may have seen someone leave the box at the shelter, either very early on Friday morning or during the previous night.
It was unclear whether the dog was left by someone who wanted to help, or someone who didn’t want it any more.
Sue Ketland, who is part of the animal welfare management team at the shelter, said: “Charlotte is in a terrible condition. It is one of the worst cases of neglect I have seen since I have been here at Wood Green.
“She is very lucky she was found when she was. I dread to think how long she had been suffering.”
n If anyone has any information about Charlotte, they should call 08701 904 090.
Sadly I've just seen an update and Charlotte was too ill to be saved and had to be pts. I hope the b*stards that did this rot in hell
