In a puppy stakes class I was in this year a very well known BIS level judge was judging and when she was going over PS she said she was glad about her correct size and best of all her ears were down - she said it is an absolute pet hate of hers that people show them alert, and that we aren't in the US.  She spoke with such passion about it even though she wasn't a whippet person.

All very interesting

Well i'm sorry but to my mind this person quite frankly shouldn't be judging our breed at all :b

If a whippet has the correct ear carriage then whether their ears are held alert in the ring or pinned back is irrelevent.

When i am judging i certainly would NOT penalise either, as both are correct.

Our breed standard calls for " Ears - Rose shaped, small, fine in texture."

If a whippet has the correct ear carriage & lets be honest we all know there are many that do not & tend to fly or prick their ears why not let it be seen in the ring?

Many times in a ring a whippet will be alerted by a ringside noise or other breed of dog & you can see their true ear carriage anyway.

On just a personal note, i love to see a whippet standing with correct ear carriage in the alert expression rather than just pinned to the back of the head as i feel it gives a far more animated & obviously alert expression BUT this is just a personal preference & as a judge i certainly would not penalise correct ears that were held back instead

I have to say I agree with you Nik......I think a whippet looks far better with an alert expression,so therefore I bait and ask for one! But it is just MY preference. :)

I cannot believe that a judge would penalise a dog for having an alert expression in the ring, that is like penalising a dog for having dew-claws or being a particular color!!

Yep! I agree with Nikki and Pam ............. and can we know who this judge is so that we can avoid them like the plague

Just fel the need to stick " twopenneth" in here. Have shown with good ears and with shall we say " suspect" ears. It seems to me that its only the obvious faults that are heavily penalised, i always wondered why you can not only get away with but do serious winning with the most dire of front construction, the most inelegant of outlines, the most weedy backends in fact just about anything that actually prevents the whippet from doing its job but woe betide the ear or tail thats obvious to all. I do of course realise that these are faults but the faults that can be seen by all are penalised without exception regardless of the outstanding virtues of the animal being judged whilst the mediocre specimen with the poor front, bad movement lumpy ugly outline but hey its ears and tail dont cause offense keeps on winning   Jan
