Would you use a dog for stud if it wasn't the best runner. When I first got Umbro I said I'd use him on my own bitch when he was older enough. What I was told was it depends if he can run or not. Now to me it makes no differance as long as the breeding is there. After all if you put 2 champs together to get a champ we'd all have them. So what do you all think. Is this why there's only 3 stud dog's in the w/n now. After all there's a lot of dogs about.

i think the breeding has a lot to do with it.dosnt matter if they can run or not.we had one and both parents were supreme champs and it could;nt run for toffee, then we got one out of a non runner[but had good breeding]and a supreme scratch dog and got 2x rch.dennis the menace.there are more than 3 good stud dogs in the country but people dont choose them ,i think they tend to use the ones who are chucking goodns, but at the end of the day they cant all be winners.there is sometimes only one faster than the others in the same litter.i would,ve loved more bitches for son of a bitch but people were frightened of getting big pups, 8)

well i think most of the majority of whippets are well bred these days

its just yer own opinion in what u would like to cover yer bitch but if i was looking to buy a pup and i would rather buy one that both parents are deasent with all the wins under ther belt then i would buy one out of a pair of average club dogs that are well bred not sayin they want throw that is cause they have in the past

there are some well bred club dogs cos as you know all whippets cant make open class i have seen a good few flying machines out of club dogs.two of my dogs are out of an unraced bitch but she was well bred.and we got a champion.

I tend to agree with you Sharon. But like Andrew said most breeding these days is good background and as breeding is a gamble anyway the two best dont always throw the best and it is nice to use your own breeding and take the chance.

Even if the dogs are brilliant racers too someone has to be the first to use a stud dog, like you say if people only use the proven sires that are producing pups at the time then we will be very short of stud dogs and different breeding.

It possibly could make a difference in the selling of your pups as some people feel they will only buy from two really good racing dogs but if the breeding is there

I think go for it ;)

Two dogs out of the same litter the faster dog may not throw any better pups than his sibling to the same bitch its all a gamble.

it is a lottery when it comes to breeding its just every ones personal prefrence to there ideal lining

 :D

just my own opinion on what ide prefer to have one out off

 each to there own

gems lad very under rated middleweight stud would have a pup off him any time  .

my view as a owner of working terriers...the best x the best

if your bitch is just average or not winning dont breed, buy one in from the best.

if your bitch is good then go to the best out there

i think people tend to use the smaller dogs 4 stud as like d dan says they r frightened of getting big pups. id love to use mickey whizz but as he raced @ 50lb i doubt anyone wud use him, never got a title but won the english derby twice scottish derby once all the big races and was r-up on numerous occasions. we did try him once to russells bitch a while back but he didnt know wot to do ( the dog i mean lol) do u think its the stud dog or bitch that produces the pups is another question? we bred our bitch whizziwg 40lb not top class only ever won one open she was bred from crazy cracker x a1 ghd we wanted a pup so decided to breed her we ended up going to mickey mouse and of course we got mickey whizz so personally i dont think a champion will produce a champ or an open class dog i think a lot has to do with luck. midnight run is a very under used stud dog i wud love to c nikkitason used more wudnt mind using him myself in years to come on our little bitch crackin whizz. i wud use mickey whizz on nikki whizz but they both go back to mickey mouse so wudnt have a clue wot to use on her maybe use my other scratch dog who never done nowt but wasnt badly bred tiger lil x sole promise ( tiger lil was whizziwigs sister) another thing i dont think just coz the stud dog is big he will throw big look @ red ranger hes about 36 to 40lb isnt he? well gorgeous matt @ our club is only 26/27lb mickey mouse was about 22lb wasnt he? i got mickey whizz 50lb so imo u just cannot tell.

I think it's really interesting when looking at which dogs you would put together because everyone would go for different qualities in dogs..............the fastest and the fastest together might not produce a champion, but a dog with early pace and a good trapper with a dog who has stamina and brains.....................is that the perfect combination?? Would be interesting to know why those who have bred champs went for the combinations they did :) Or am I being too scientific????

Got one out of him here David. He's the gutsiest pup I've ever had and I've had a few. To be honoust I didn't even know what the stud dog was when I got him just liked the look of the pup so I bought him. It was after words I found out what his dad was. So breading dosn't really matter to me. Makes a change having some thing that not every thing else is out of.

get steve bell to bread gypsy queen, can weave through on the bends fantastic to watch pity she is retired.but she retiredwith supreme vet on the bends .

dont think gems lad has had many bitches but has thrown some cracking dogs.

Sharon i would say it's worth a gamble. I have a lot of respect for people who use something different and more so those who take a chance on an unproven stud dog.

go for it Sharon if the bloodlines are there you can get a good litter, you can put the top dog and top bitch together and get nowt

I would like to put Tillie LITTLE DOLL (chicane x 2 become one ) to AVIT (gillette x taylor maid) at the end next year if Jac is up for it

sorted then after weeks of studying the data base find the perfect match on my doorstep can't be bad
