There are also many support groups for specific pet conditions on places like Yahoo and Google, I joined the feline epilepsy one for while last year. You have to be a bit careful as most of the contributors are from the US so terminology/medications may differ slightly, but I made some really good contacts with people in the UK (and it got heaps better almost overnight after just changing from Hill's to Royal Canin)

Agree  I joined a couple of groups on Yahoo after Josh was diagnosed with kidney failure. I'm convinced it was following suggestions from people that allowed him to live for 5 and a half months after diagnosis. Even the vets said it was surprising he was still alive. I'm sure the Cushings support will be just as helpful and that you will pick up lots of tips in managing this disease. All the best and best wishes for lots more years with your Sunny.

Only just spotted this thread Doris - sorry to hear of Sunny's troubles. But I would say, 90% of dogs in his position would be written off as suffering from 'old age' and wouldn't even get the chance of a vet's exam and work-up, so he's already on a winner! I'm sure there's an awful lot of Cushing's on the go but we hardly diagnose any because often owners assume it's a waste of time doing expensive diagnostics when they've already made their mind up that it's just age.

Cushing's is a fiddle to diagnose and treat but your vet seems to have been very thorough and I am sure they'll get Sunny started on meds ASAP. You'll be worshipping your insurance company, too! The outlook for Cushing's patients depends hugely on the site of the problem (ie pituitary or adrenal) but most do respond well to Vetoryl. Don't forget that Cushing's syndrome itself isn't fatal - it's a slow-moving, subtle disease, to the extent that if a case is mild and cost is an issue I might not even push the owners to treat it at all.

I'll be thinking of the wee man - and don't forget, HE doesn't have a clue that there's anything wrong! :huggles:

hi everyone, thanks for your suggestions, I have joined the yahoo site and am just waiting for my application to be approved

Sunny started on his medication on Monday morning, I kept popping home every hour to check on him which drove my boss nuts cos it was stocktake  but sadly he had a dog who developed cushings a couple of years ago who didn't respond to the treatment and had to be pts so at least he understood and didn't try to stop me :- "

anyway, I know its early days but Sunny is looking brighter already, he is due back at the vets on Thursday for more blood tests to see how he is responding to the medication so we've got our fingers cautiously crossed

so, as it is my birthday tomorrow, I'm off for a kipsie then out on the town tonight for an evening of drinking and dancing and general living-it-up and letting my hair down, just to take my mind off things and relax a bit

that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it :- " (w00t)

Hope you enjoyed your night out  and Hope Sunny responds to the treatment. :huggles:

 Happy Birthday for tomorrow  And enjoy yourself tonight

Will keep everything crossed that Sunny responds to treatment :luck: :luck:

hi, just an up-date on Sunny's condition (hope someone is interested :- " )

Sunny was very bright initially but started looking a bit down again this weekend. He went back thursday for more blood tests and we just got the results today - the medication is too high so they have halved it to 30mg Vetoryl per day, so here we are another £170 lighter  only cost us £700 to get this far, and he has to go back in 25 days to see how he is doing on the lower dose - again, thank god for insurance

the cushings is caused by the pituitary gland, which i dont think is the best place but i'm going to spend some time finding out more about it now i know

would also like to mention that it is my no.1 son's birthday today - 17!!!!! I can't believe it!!! feel like a right old bag now :( (Jan D, if you read this, you should feel like one too! he was only 8!)

and it is Sunny's 12 birthday in a couple of weeks so am really looking forward to putting some nice pictures on here (fingers crossed)

so basically its so far so good :luck:

oh yeah - I had the best birthday weekend  :- " o:)

Latest Sunny update!

he went back to the vets for more tests, got the results last week - the vet says that the results were great and that Sunny is on the right level of medication  for now anyway :luck: and that we should see a steady, uneventful improvement

Sunny is going back to the vets next month just so he can give him a quick check up

just have to sort out his diet now - the vet has been recommending hill liver diet but I'm really uncomfortable about putting him on a single type of complete food - anyone got any suggestions?

Sunny in the garden this afternoon - one looking less than happy, one of him doing his normal, shouting for food!!!!!!!!!

feed me!!!!!!!!!!!!

edited to say that it has cost us £850 to get to this stage - just waiting for insurance to cough up now

He did a blood test and I had to collect a urine sample then was told to phone back later. When I called back he said that Sunny has raised cholestrol (sp) and liver enzymes and that he had small traces of blood in his urine (I hadn't noticed any)

[/quote]

Glad to see Sunny is doing well Doris. Also glad to see that you dont seem to be beating yourself up quite so much about it all. (blood in the urine cannot always be seen by the naked eye, it would have been picked up on a PH dip test). Must admit, tho I havnt had first hand experience I always thought Cushings was a condition that you medicated & lived with. Hope all will be ok with the insurance, thats one of the worst things about dealing with a newly diagnosed illness is getting money out of that lot. Best of :luck: for the future & keep us posted about Sunnys progress.

aw that's great news that he's sorted with his medication. Love his hungry photo, hope you get his diet sorted too then he and you can look forwrd to his continued improvement :luck: :huggles:

Glad to hear Sunny's level of medication has been sorted, we hit on Frankie's very quickly, 60mg Vetoryl daily!

With regards to Sunny's diet, my Vet never even suggested any sort of 'special' diet for Frankie, the medication should sort the problem out. Frankie just has his normal food (BARF diet) and it took him about 3 months to look in good condition again and he looked very similar to Sunny at the time of his diagnosis.

You would not know he has anything wrong with him now (just over a year down the line) just to look at him although he is still a bit wobbly so does fall over on occasions if he is galloping and can't control the direction he wants to go in!!! I found him on Rupert's bench this morning, goodness knows how he got up there as I didn't think he had the strength in his hindlegs to jump, but felt it prudent to lift him down as I could see him landing on the tiled floor with a clatter and possibly breaking something.

Hope this helps! :huggles: to Sunny!
