Hello all,

The time has come where I need to get my dogs teeth cleaned. The vet has said they can do this but they have to put them out to do it. Has anyone ever had this done before, because I am a little bit dubious about putting her out. :(

Hi jacq, we have had genos done a coulpe of times now, its not really anything to worry about, i would just make sure that you have got the whole day off as if shes anything like grandad she will not like being left in the cage at the vets and will scream the place down, and they will ring you up at work and get you to come and pick her up as thats what our vet did when his were done [lol]

Oh no Lily won't like being put in a strange cage at the vets she doesn't go in a cage at home only at racing. Thanks Cursty

I've never had to have my dogs teeth cleaned by the vet but it's probably as safe as any other op needing anaesthetic -_- Once it's been done try using Oral Logic Enzyme Gel every week. It's brilliant stuff, all you do is squeeze a bit into the dogs mouth, mine love it and would eat the whole tube if allowed. It coats the teeth with natural enzymes which break down plaque. My dogs are 6 & 5 and have excellent teeth and I have never brushed them once! You can get it from the vets but I bought a job lot last year at Crufts a fair bit cheaper. Hope your dog is o.k. after her visit to the dentist

I have been using Pro Den Plaque Off and its really quite good, you just put a small scoop of the powder on their food each day and it lasts for ever!!

After about 3 or 4 weeks it softens up any plaque which can be easily scaled off by yourself.

Can't you get a de-scaler and do it yourself ?? .......Once Lily get's used to it she'll be fine ..........My vet wanted to do my old girl's teeth as they were :x .......so I scraped them.......... this is when we started her with raw chicken wing's ........Ken was well impressed and it saved Joanna having to go under as she's got a bad heart :sweating: .........Brewers yeast in powder form is good at helping keep plaque at bay aswell

Hi all :)) Fragaria think i spelt it right  is a homeopathic remedy, which is also good for softening and slow down & help prevent the build up oftartar on the teeth :))

:luck: Jaquie with whatever you choose

Caz x

Thanks everyone

I have got one of those scapers but it's such hard work :sweating: I will try some of your methods then before going to the vets.

Hi Hannah,

I have heard of giving them chicken wings, but was told it can damage there insides?

Try raw marrow bones, I was amazed what a difference they made. Even to the old terrier.

Thanks Juley - I'll give them a go

If you're unlucky, you may have a problem ..........but you ought to see Twits teeth 8)

Fragaria - this has been mentioned before on k9 and I went looking to get some but couldn't find it anywhere and the health shop person said they'd never heard of it - but she could have been a novice at the job.

Does it go by another name at all?

JT - how much does Oral Logic Enzyme Gel cost and what size tube does it come in? Is Oral Logic the parent company who actually makes it or is that a subsidiary name? Can you tell me the name of the parent company if there is one - if my vets don't have it (and I doubt it 'cause they've never mentioned it to me before) then I need to give them as much info as possible if hey are willing to get it in for me.

Brewer's yeast sounds like a fairly easy option ... does it keep plaque away AFTER you've had it scraped or is it a softener to help you scrape easier?

Thanks,

Thanks,

It's called LOGIC Oral Hygiene Gel & its made by CEVA ANIMAL HEALTH LTD.

90 The Broadway, Chesham, Bucks. HP5 1EG. U.K. Licenced by CARDON Pharmaceuticals, N.V. Belgium.

At the vets it costs about £6 per 70g tube but I got mine at Crufts from a company called Vet Medic. www.vet-medic.com It's £5.45 but they did a special offer if you buy more tubes. They also sell fragaria. It's well worth getting some logic gel, it's just great stuff.

The brewers yeast tabs (crushed) are ment to help with plaque as its full of live enzymes that break plaque down :)

I start using the logic gel asap. Costs me £7 a tube- well worth it.

Dentals at the vets are straight forward if all she needs is a scale and polish, if you can it yourself then go ahead, but at work me and the other nurse try really hard to polish the teeth, because when you scale them you can create little striations that if not polished down can make plaque worse!
