Can I have some suggestions on how to clean teeth and what you use?

One of my whips has bad plaque and breath. Been vets. Give raw bones time to time, brush couple times a week....one tooth looks awful

Chicken wings a couple of times a week are good for cleaning teeth. A lot of people use Frigarea ( not sure of spelling) regularly and I've heard talk of Plaque Off which is added to food. I use chicken wings and occasionally give a good scrub with a damp toothbrush.

Never brush my dogs teeth but do use a de-scaler. If the teeth are badly covered in plaque and the breath smells, it is probably a Vet job and a proper clean, may also need extractions.

Chicken wings here too or knuckle bones.

I do keep some doggy toothpaste in too :D roast dinner flavour from Dorwest Herbs  but havnt had much need to use it .....yet

I brush their teeth every six weeks or so and use a descaler. You've to be careful of the gums with the descaler and introduce it gradually.

I have one dog whose teeth are dirty no matter what I do and others whose teeth are perfect. Mr Dirty Teeth doesn't chew anything though so his teeth are not cleaned by toys etc....

Zoomie always has a toy in his mouth so that seems to keep his teeth pretty clean - I wash the toys once a week.

Our old ex racing greyhound had terrible bad teeth and nothing we tried worked.... Sidney on the other hand has this toy which helps clean his teeth.... think hubby bought it in Tescos.... it is minty smelling .... he also has some dentastix to nibble on.... he hates the tooth brush so this is what we've now come up with.. his teeth are pearly white and his breath is ok, I suppose for a dog

Sidney does have his teeth checked when we go to the vets so we'd know if what we're doing, isn't working..... so far so good

My friend has a 12 yr old lurcher and she got some "plaque off" powder from the vet. it is sprinkled in their food every day ( a tiny amount) and she has already seen an improvement, it is very reasonable too at approx £6 for a tub that will last up to 6 mths not sure what it is made of but i think it's green. :))

I on the other hand find chicken wings work a treat and they enjoy them much more than a toothbrush

When you say chicken wings........ this is where I am going to sound like a right ole divvy  ...... so you mean off a roast chicken, sort of chicken wings?? always thought chicken bones were to soft for doggies....... forgive my stupidness :b

Noooo

Chicken wings from the local butcher pre frozen for 48 hrs then thawed and it's as simple as that, :D they get munched up in approx 1 min, raw chicken bones are ok ( i think it's the cooked ones that splinter) there will be plenty of other threads on k9 with advice check out the FAQ feeding thread

Ps the dogs love them, and dance round the kitchen when i get them out of the fridge (w00t)

I also chicken wings, turkey necks, beef bones and whole chicken frames. All raw of course.

Works a treat.

My boys have a Pedigree Denta Stix every evening which they love.

Depending on how bad the plaque is you might want to use something else first to clean and then to maintain with the denta stix. But they might be worth trying for a week or so & then you will see if they are working or not. If you give them regularly they do a fantastic job. You can buy them at Pets@home & most pet shops.

If you decide to give them a go I would recommend that you don't buy the shops own brand, whilst they are slightly cheaper in my honest opinion they are not very good!

Good luck & I hope what ever you try does the job. :luck:

I use Dorwest roast dinner toothpaste twice a week for all of my dogs (Except Georgy because she's teething) & they all have perfect white teeth including my 13 1/2 year old ESS Amber.

Thanks for the replies.

Harvey is going vets at the end of the month for his annual check up. Took him approx 4 months ago to ask bout his teeth. I suspect he will need to loose one

Have tried tooth paste from vets.

He not a chewy type dog....but loves to knaw on a knuckle bone for bout half hour.

I'm going to try chicken wings, aswell as paste

Many thanks

My old girl was booked into have her teeth done by our vet as they were :x and she could kill a man with a wiff of her breath (w00t) ........This was 5 years ago ......I got told to try the chicken wings, and within a week her teeth were sooo much cleaner that all I had to do was use the descaler to finish the job :D .......Even my vet was pleased ;)
