Rocket has been here two and a half weeks now. He is approx 8. Terrier cross. Determined little monkey :p

He doesnt appear to have been well socialised, but did live with other dogs before. I get the impression he was left alone inside and outside for long periods, he shows anxiety going outside to go to the toilet, and looks panicked if i touch the door, like he has been shut out before.

We walk twice a day. He has met a few dogs and played nicely with them. His recall is 'selective' so untl thats sorted he is walked on the lead. He tried to go home with a nice lady and her gorgeous collie, I mean, I cant blame him but he is mine now!

He found his voice after around a week, I guess when he started to feel settled. He doesnt get any rewards for barking. No attention no doors opened nothing. Even the kids are great with this.

On the lead he barks as soon as he sees a dog. His tail goes into overdrive and if he were a bigger dog he would happily pull me into the road to get access to another dog. As soon as this happens i make the 'uh oh' sound and we reverse. We walk the other way til he is calm then turn around. Theres a lot of older slower dog walkers by me so we always see the dog again. We keep retreating until he gets it, which does happen, but by the next walk is forgotten.

If he barks at seemingly nothing then we stand still and he gets not even a look. When he is calm I say 'quiet' and do the hand motion, like one hand on top of the ther than move each hand to the side.

He is an older dog andhe is very determined and im not expecting a miracle overnight, but please share with me your success stories to keep me motivated! And of course feel free to suggest a better approach! My last and only dog I was responsible for was terrified of everything so I trained him slightly differently, having a dog that wants to play but might come accross as agressive to other dogs and people is new to me! I do plan on adding doggo #2 but I want to iron these things out first so he isnt passing on bad habits

I have trained olive if there is another dog that she keeps eye contact with me and not with the dog, i did this by using kibble and when ever their was a dog i would feed the piece of kibble as a reward, if she barked she got no kibble. Hope this is what you mean?
With regards to recall just practice in the home until the dog understands you then you can do it outside the house on the lead and when he comes back reward, if not no reward. Then practice off the lead. in regards to barking go see my thread Excessive Behaviour? Go outside with him until he learns he wont be locked out. He will understand in the end I promise and you will get there in the end! OOO good luck with #2

So Dogs Trust have just started running their dog school near me, I think I wil enrol him and we will get some help, it also means he can meet dogs in an enclosed controled environment, none of our local walking hotspots are enclosed and are all near major danger points such as the railway, roads and open fields!

Dogs Trust training has a great reputation. Go for it!

At what age did you start to teach Olive this, did she learn it quickly or has it taken a while?

I think you're on the right track IMHO. We have a rescue dog too and it's taken over a year to see a marked improvement in his behaviour in this regard, so it is possible.

How quickly did Olive respond?
she understands it now I started training her in Spain so only a few weeks ago. I could do a thread on how to train your dog to 'watch me'. (the word I use)

Personally I would not be interested, but there may be others that would like to hear your personal experience and how you train a dog to do this. It will be interesting to see how many replies you get.

yeah, i just taught it olive because she barked at dogs and she would seem aggressive.

Always good to see how others do it ;) I guess with all things like this though, once you've made a video and posted it somewhere like YouTube, be prepared to take the positive comments with the unhelpful ones.
