A neighbour passed the house today and he came up our little drive to the gate to speak to the dogs. Unfortunately his dog came too and our lot (4whippets + Milly + 2 iggies) all went berserk barking and pawing at the gate.

They were furious and in the kerfuffle Pheonix and Zinzin (brother and sister) went for each other and Pheonix was bitten on the ear. :(

Normally they bark if anyone goes near but they've never done this before - the neighbour's dog is huge though. Is it too much for me to expect other people to keep away from our gate.. it's not directly on the road so they can easily walk past!?! Grrrrrr!

It's taken ages to get the bleeding to stop - Pheonie's looking up at the apple on the worksurface that he's just had a bitty of to make him feel better. :huggles:

:huggles: aww poor Pheonix sending him lots off :huggles: :huggles:

Poor thing. Hope the ear gets better real soon.

:luck:

I've heard that if you cut the bottom off a sock and pop it over the head it really helps to stop the bleeding. I hate people that bring their dog up the drive, its just the odd one. The dogs go mad.

the worst thing about a bit on the ear ,every time he shakes his head it will start the bleeding off again.

hope it heals soon, poor pheonix

People don't think, do they? Friends of mine with 5 whippets have an elderly neighbour who regularly holds his terrified Yorkie up to their front window and laughs at the whippets going ballistic! He's not being deliberately sadistic. He just obviously has no real understanding of dogs.

Hope Phoenix is feeling better soon and that he and Zinzin are friends again. :huggles:

Poor thing... :huggles:

I think he needs a bit more apple to make him feel better...or even better a biscuit or 2... (w00t)

Poor Phoenix. :( Get well soon.

My neighbours own a Paper shop next door and sometimes thier collie lies near the door mainly when the shops closed - well someone walked past with a dog last week and their collie broke the pane of glass in the bottom of the door - trying to get at the other dog. (w00t)

Ill avoid walking past now. (w00t)

I hope Phoenix is feeling beter soon I hate it when peoepl do things like that. We have the front gate and a gate on our front door so if were doing something and have the front door open the dogs can see us but It drive me mad when some comes past and say oh how are the dogs and procede to shout them till all 10 are going bongers at the gate then you have to settel them all again as the prat walks off. I think its some sort of thrill they gtet doing things to wind up dogs or maybe just lack of maners

A good way of stopping ears bleeding is to dab a bit of cornflour on the wound. This seals it up (bit like if you put flour on liver to seal it before cooking) and after the bleeding has completely stopped, the cornflour will eventually crumble off - I have done this many times when the boys have run through brambles and nicked a vein in the ear flap and have never had a problem with infection. My dad told me about this as apparently during the war when he was in tanks in the desert, the soldiers always had to dry shave and used to cut themselves time after time. They always kept a small tin of cornflour in the tank as part of their first aid kit!

What a good tip! I wish I'd seen this a couple of days ago, Sophie scratched her ear on some brambles and although it was only a tiny nick it seemed to bleed forever. I've used cornflour if I've ever 'quicked' a nail, but didn't think of using it on an ear. I'll remember next time

I hope Pheonix is feeling better

You are full of useful information Gill! That is definitely one to remember.

I was moaning yesterday as I was watching my Dads whippets going mad barking in their garden by the wall and when I looked there was an elderly couple peering over the wall, they also had a dog with them which the whippets seemed to sense. It just didn't occur to these people that the reason the dogs were barking was because of them :- " :- "

Hope phoenix heals up nice and fast :luck:

I'm off to get some cornflour. Good tip

Hebe had a cut on her ear flap a few weeks ago, I think Scrumpy caught her when they were play fighting. With Hebe being mainly white around her head it looked like she'd had her throat slit, blood everywhere (w00t)

I bathed it when I got in & smothered it in Aloe Vera gel & then just left it until the scabs dropped off, about 4 days later.

Hope Phoenix is o.k. soon :luck:

 Just an update - Pheonix is absolutely find now and 'somebody' has given his ear a good wash (probably his sister :huggles: ) and all that's left is a wee mark. They're best of friends again and were sharing a bed this afternoon.

He's such a big brave man Ha hahahaha

There's an old git around here who used to bark at the dogs as he went past - one day I went out and barked back at him.. he's always terribly polite now!!! ( but I completely avoid him because his terrier attacked Lottie  )

Poor Pheonix :( Glad he is feeling better :)

Some people have no brains  stupid man

Ears are buggers - Vader has managed to catch his recently too (wont bore you with how he did it, but I did feel as if I was in an episode of key stone cops at the time .... ) it's eventually stopped bleeding 3 days later after he has managed to splatter blood up the walls in most of the rooms

We once had a neighbour who I caught kicking the fence and shouting at the dogs - he nearly died as I didnt realise I was watching him. I didnt speak to him ever again but OH had to make amends when he needed help to get himself off the garage roof  :b :clown:

The trouble is many people do not have any understanding of animals. I always fence such a way that there are 2 fences between my dogs and public road/path. It is easy in suburb, i just put fence from the house to the side fence, so the dogs do not have have access to the fromt yard.
