Not a very nice topic but the doorbell just went and I think it startled Dennis. Sometimes when he gets startled he releases his anal glands and we call it - Fishy bum!!!

Does anyone else's dog do this?

The smell is not good!!

I don't think so but I don't know?

Hmm, not noticed this or was aware it could even occur. Jimbo does the odd scoot now and again, in fact he did one yesterday (luckily I was at work so his mum sorted it out :D). Now that you've made this public @Josie, aren't you worried about a string of malicious doorbell ringers? :D:D:D

They should empty when he poos - if you are concerned, you could add a little fibre into his diet. Leftover (or extra if you dont have leftovers) veg is always appreciated.

making Oliver remove doorbell as I write.....

Misty has only had that twice, both times in the Vets after surgery.
She does have her glands emptied every few months as she seems to have trouble doing it herself :(

I just had Marley at the vets tonight to get his anal glands empty, well it didn't go smoothly like usual not my own vet a new girl, she hurt Marley and he got very upset . She says one of his glands are solid so he needs to get them flushed out under anaesthetic? Going to speak to my own vet tomorrow. Poor Marley is feeling sorry for himself :(

Oh no poor Marley :-( I don’t like it when they switch vets!

I know its happening a lot here at the moment . Its becoming really difficult to get your own.
And thank you

Oh dear. Hope he gets back to his normal self soon!

Jasper smelt a bit cheesy over the summer. In retrospect I think it was down to warm weather and stinky ponds, but I asked the vet if he could check his anal glands when I was there for something else. We very quickly agreed that the only way anyone would be checking his glands would be under sedation ;) Sedating sighthounds can be risky, so he'll need something worse than a faint waft of Stilton for that to happen!

We went back to the vet this afternoon and we seen our own vet, he managed to clean Marleys anal glands straight away no pain. He thinks that the other vet wasn't doing it correctly, so I've said from now on I'll be calling to make sure its my vet thats their .
@JudyN i was worrying about sedation but it's worked out ok. But Marley doesn't smell off stilton lol its rotten fish he can clear a room in seconds:eek:
@Violet Turner totally agree dogs don't forget when something goes wrong at the vet's, it can be bad enough getting them to go there in the first place.
