Sorry so what rescue are you and where are you based???  :))
I'm Phoenyx Animal Refuge, website is being revamped but here's the link:

http://phoenyxanimalrefuge.mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/

Basically I take in mainly small beasties - I concentrate on taking in the old, ill or traumatised and they stay here for life. The dogs are also mainly those with problems or the elderly, I do very little on the re-homing side because that's just not what Phoenyx is about :b

And she helped a poor whippet out and finally she had some comfort and love for her last few hours. :huggles:

Hi, the white one (Nana) is from Sheya, we got her late last summer when she was just under a year, previously called Bess, but as the one we had already (little black thing with enourmous pricked ears) is called Tess we had to do something about that. It was remarkable, she learnt her new name within the first afternoon we had her, it then took her a week to learn what sit meant after that she has been WONDERFUL :D :D :D :D

HI Jules,

Can you tell me more about the 3 legged beauties? :)

Can they still run about happily? How long did it take them to adapt?

I think we might be faced with that decision shortly :( although I'm hoping it doesnt come to it.

BTW - Dylan  *Swoon*

 lets just say that Jonathan cleared a 5-bar gate a while back without breaking a stride - or anything else!! He nearly gave me heart failure doing it but he and Storm are both extremely agile at speed. Both lads are front leg amputees, pointy dogs do seem to adapt very well to amputations, they aren't a heavy as some breeds so the strain on the other legs is more evenly distributed. When walking, they are a little more ungainly - rear leg amputees seem to balance better as most of the forward weight is put on the front legs of pointy hounds but these two manage very well.

Jonny came already operated on, he was a stray and the Dog Warden service had the op done for us, Storm came with nerve damage to his leg and despite extensive treatment to try to save it, we had to have it amputated. Jonny has a stump, Storm had full scapula removed and if I ever had to make the decision again I would opt for full shoulder removal every time.

Reasons for full scapula removal? Much less post op and recovery pain, 'cleaner' look, less likely to have problems (Jonny's had problems with regrowth at the cut end of the bone and sores), and Storm certainly doesn't seem to 'miss' the leg whereas Jonny will try to use it - although he has now remastered cocking his leg to pee  and he no longer bites the dust by trying to give a paw :(

Actually, I think I'll put a separate post in the general dog chat section with more details (and pics) - there may be others with experience of this too. Going to have some bait now but will post a linky when I've done it,

Jules ;)
