Hi there, I haven't been on line for ages now but wondered if I could get your advice/opinion about whether to get a dog or a bitch to join my two whippets.

Rocky is nearly 12 years old now and Bailey is nearly 3 years - both are neutered and best of friends, fantastic natures too :) The reason for thinking about getting another whippet is for Bailey to have a playmate, Rocky is still on great form but is now getting a little stiffer after he runs around on walks the day after - bless him. Bailey is smashing so maybe we just stick to our too but if we do go for it just not sure if a bitch or dog would upset our two - your advice gratefully received.

Thank you so much inadvance.

Hi Rebecca :)

Nice to hear from you again!!

I was going to say a bitch but then I got to thinking that a girly could create rivalry between Rocky and Bailey, even though they are currently the best of friends, and because of that potential then maybe a dog would be better

Then it's a matter of deciding whether to get a young pup or an older dog (more difficult with an older one to join an established pair such as your two  )

Decisions, decisions!!! :sweating: I wish you the best of luck in your choice!! :luck:

Hi there, wonderful to hear from you - and a MASSIVE thank you for your quick response really appreciated and very helpful.

Yes the next decision is whether to get a puppy or an adult!!!!! Bailey was a dream to train but if there was a whippet over 6 months that might be a way forward especially as there are quite a few looking for homes - need to get my brain in action lol!!!!!! Will let you know what we decide :)

Thank you for this, I'd rather get advice from people that have whippets, know the breed

I would suggest that you would be best with a dog puppy. I have three whippet dogs, two entire, one neutered, and they all get on immensely well. I sometimes think I would love a bitch, but my planned new addition will be a dog pup nonetheless. When they join the pack as babies they aren't generally seen by the resident adults as any threat to the existing pecking order and so find their place in it naturally as they grow up. And although a pack of lads will occasionally have a handbags moment over a chew or a toy they are actually slightly less likely to fall out with the other canine residents than many bitches. Plus, as Jane has said, even neutered dogs can become rivals where a lady is concerned.

Hope this helps, Annie x

I'd stick with boys, as both of yours are neutered there shouldn't be any rivalry if you did have a bitch though, and I know lots of people who have entire dogs, and they still get on fine. That's one of my worries with having Candy - that the boys will fall out over her. They have a great relationship at the moment, and I'd hate for that to change. A friend has come up with a brilliant solution for me though - that I should live in the caravan with her when she comes in season, so looks like that's what I will be doing

So, I think you could get either and still have a harmonious household. In my experience I would say that dogs are cleaner than bitches. After all the years of thinking that dogs cock their legs up your furniture, I have two of the cleanest boys I could ever have, and they would never make a mess unless in extreme need, which hasn't happened yet

I agree with Jane, introducing a bitch may cause a bit of rivalry between your boys. I have to say that when I introduced a young bitch into my pack a few years ago, it was my Alpha bitch who was also young that caused the problem. The dogs just adored her equally with no fights or squabbles.

There are always plenty of young whippets on ePupz. The only problem with preloved whippets is that you can inherit someone elses problems, health or behavioural. Toddy was 7 months and a steep learing curve for me. He had a bad start and it has taken a year to turn him around. I have never given up on him (thought about it once or twice! ) and we would not part with him for the world. I do not know if you insure your dogs. As a rule, I do not. I have a vet fund instead. Toddy was so wild when he arrived that I insured him convinced that he would break a leg or something. The idea being I would insure him untill he calmed down / for 1 year. It was a great investment as he developed a range of short term health problems which fortunately, he seems to have outgrown.

The other consideration is buying a young pre loved or pre owned bitch that is not neutered. There is the huge advantage / satisfaction of preventing her being bought by someone who will breed from her for profit like poor little Molly.

Puppy or young preloved, it is a hard choice. I always go for rescue and secondhand but that is my choice.

Have fun deciding :luck: :D

i have bought in pups and adult dogs

harley my old boy is nearly 16 years old

gus came when harley was 7 gus was 18 month old

kitt came as a pup harley was 13

tina

I'm similar to you Annie in the fact I thought it would be lovely to have a girlie in the house but its great to know boys would get on - maybe stick to what I know lol!!!!

June - thats really helpful, I just don't want to upset my too! Candy looks adorable, worth living in a caravan for :)

Eve - I rescued Rocky when he was 3 years and love the idea of rescueing a whippet but having two little ones (children that is!!!) I'm not the ideal candidate. Love the way yours have got on so well and your honesty on retraining - definately something to consider.

Tina - wonderful the way all yours have got on sooooooooo well, I hope mine follow in that way too as thinking the next addition will be a little boy after the fab advice from you all

............... that I should live in the caravan with her when she comes in season, so looks like that's what I will be doing
I suppose, June, that means Candy won't be coming to live with me :-

..... and I had it all planned out!! ;) :teehee:

Don't rule out rescue / preloved completely. Many have been brought up with children (quite a few ads state that this is the case). Often the owners have just taken on more than they can manage ( either in time or finincial outlay). I think the consideration with a rescue and children is that it is a fairly calm quiet whippet. Young dogs can be a bit wild like Toddy was. A dog of about 2 years used to children would still be worth considering.

What about one of Molly's pups if you want a dog puppy? :D :D :D :D :- :- :-

That is a good point - I won't rule out any possibility :) Is Molly one of your whippets???? Don't tempt me :teehee: there pics on here???? he he!!!!

Just seen puppy pics, aren't they just utterly adorable - WELL DONE MOLLY x

Molly, is the Scruples Rescue whippet. There are threads about her and the pups on the whippet section above and below this topic post.

Jinnyfizz (Jane) TrishG and Metalchicken (Annie) have all been involved in her plight and subsequent rescue. She gave birth to 6 puppies yesterday. :D

Just noticed that you have found them. The puppies will be looking for a home in 8 - 10 weeks time (If Jane can bear to part with them  ). Some nice wee boys (hint hint)

Oh bless her, I will have a nose through the threads about Molly. The puppies sounds wonderful, soooooooooooooo very tempting I must admit - thank you for thinking of me - you must be all so proud of Molly ;)

Just thought I'd add here that Scruples is keeping a list of all who enquire after Molly's pups, but as they are still only 2 days old as yet that is all we are doing. Please feel free to enquire but we're not making any promises to anyone yet

Quite right, Annie

It is VERY early days yet for little Leo, Aire, Bay, Ash and Amy but, even so, we have had several enquiries from people asking if there may be a possibility of homing one of them. This is so heartwarming  but there has been no decision made about the age these pups will leave Scruples in Devon (although it certainly won't be before they are 9 weeks old due to their completing their vaccinations before they go). All potential homes will be home checked and the puppies will be homed in the most secure and loving homes available

The majority of information about Molly and her pups can be found on the K9 threads (thank you for pointing Rebecca towards these, Eve) and also on Scruples Whippet Rescue facebook page and the blog http://scrupleswhippetrescue.blogspot.com/

I should point out that these puppies are not pure whippets - they are carrying a minor proportion of greyhound blood in them as well

Scruples Whippet Rescue Trustees are myself, Jane Wood, together with Annie Cholewa, Becka Abbott and Gillian Law. Between us we manage the day to day running of Scruples with very welcome support from a myriad of helpers across the UK - in the case of Molly, it was Trish who went to get her and fostered her before passing her over to Becka for her onward journey to me in Devon :D

And let's not forget who originally spotted the advert offering poor Molly for sale when she was heavily in whelp ....... it was Alison (Hula on K9)!!

We all have alot to thank you for, Alison :huggles:

Sorry for rambling on a bit  suffering from severe sleep deprivation at the mo  ......... things have gone a bit off topic here as the thread is not about Molly or Scruples but I feel that anything posted on K9 (as an open forum) should be correct so that's why I've put this post up :D

I'll just reiterate what I said in my original post on this topic ....... Good luck with your decision-making, Rebecca!!! :luck: :huggles:

Keeping us off topic here just a little longer - sorry Rebecca - but I just wanted to say how grateful all the Scruples trustees are to everyone who has offered us their support, their time and their money

There are only the four of us - Jane, Annie, Gillian and Becka - and as trustees we are responsible (legally and morally) for ensuring that Scruples Whippet Rescue is run in accordance with our constitution and our standing rules and complies with all the requirements of the Charity Commission etc. ... sometimes we are going to have to make some tough decisions ... in fact at the moment, while Scruples is so new, being a trustee seems to be more about making decisions than about anything else ... (unless you're Jane of course, with Molly and her lovely pups to look after as well :)) ). It's a heavy responsibility for all four of us and we take it very seriously. But we hope we are putting in place a framework that will allow us to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome many more vulnerable whippets, be they pup, adult, or oldie, in the years to come. And we know we won't be able to do that without the help of all the wonderful people who are volunteering to help us :huggles:

Sorry Rebecca ... back on track now ... and good luck in your decision making from me too :) And if you do decide to go for a rescue, or what was described to me the other day as a recycled dog  , then don't forget that Scruples also exists, as our constitution states, to help and advise in any rescue situation if there is anything useful we can offer

If it had been up to me I would have got Molly myself but I have an OH who would not allow me to do that .

I had to fight long and hard to get the dogs I have .

Anyway Molly and her pups are in the best place now
