Returning home on Monday morning there was a little blue whippet bitch running up and down the street in a panic. Although I live in Sussex, my thoughts immediately flew to Tilly. The poor thing was in such a state I couldn't get near her, even with the chicken I "acquired" from a passing workmans sandwich or trying to bribe her by taking one of my whippets out.

It took me best part of 2 hours to catch her and was so frustrating as she just stayed about 10 yards away from me. The pair of us must have walked miles, even going up the downs and back again. I eventually sat in the middle of the road with a bowl of dog food until she approached me. Good job it's a fairly quiet road!

After establishing with Mally that it wasn't Tilly, rang the police/ dog wardens etc and took her to my vet to see if she was chipped, which she was, but owner lived in Wales, a long way from Sussex!!

I eventually got a phone call from a very relieved owner who was on holiday locally from Wales and had lost "Blue" during a walk on the South Downs and one happy dog and owner were re-united. (shame in a way as she was so pretty, fitted in with my girls well and made herself so at home on my lap that I wouldn't have minded keeping her)

After reading the sad news about poor Tilly, How glad am I that Blue eventually allowed herself to be caught and there was a happy ending this time.

What a good job she found your street Debbie, well done on re-uniting her with her owner :huggles: You're a star.

Im glad of a happy ending for a change and it's not easy trying to catch a poor dog, who is scared stiff :(

We had the same situation about 2 yrs ago, with a lurcher and a whippet,,,We tried for over a week to catch them, but they would not trust us :( It was not a happing ending for them though :( :(

good for you for persevering, I'm sure it's knowing about people in the same boat here that makes you stop and try your best instead of walking on , hoping someone else will do the good deed, glad it was a happy ending

think you're right Julie

Both times i've caught lost dogs, what has been in my mind was the sick twisting of my guts when our Audrey (greyhound) was missing for over 30 hours...... and knowing that without the help of good strangers she would never have been caught.

thinking that i could be the last person with the power to intervene before someone's beloved dog meets a grizzley end, has been what has prompted me to walk the streets of B'ham at midnight on the trail of a lurcher i'd spotted - and fill my freshly valeted car with 9 months of filthy & boisterous labrador!
