Sidney is staying with us for ten days while my Mum is looking after my friend's greyhounds. Since my Mum has had him, he's always had diarrhoea to varying degrees, usually towards the end of the day. At first we put it down to the stress of three homes in three days :( , then meeting Roscoe and Grover and now coming to my house (Mum visits him every day and we go on two walks a day together so he still has his bond.) At first he was also being sick which we also put down to stress and the cheap food he'd been on.

He now has JW puppy food with a tiny bit of wet puppy food to mix. He's been on this for about two weeks.I stopped giving him treats as he was off his food and I didn't want too many variables or to fill him up in between meals.

:x :x (Gross alert!) Anyway, this afternoon in the space of ten minutes he has pooped quite a lot of basically light brown liquid in five different spots on the patio. :x We rang the vets but they are closed for half day on Saturday. Sidney is not ill in himself, is not off his food now and seems to have tons of energy still but he is still as skinny as he was when we got him, which is quite underweight. I don't think it's a call out type emergency so we will watch him carefully and take him first thing Monday.

(a) What can we do in terms of food to help him - do you think I should give him rice/ chicken or could the change make it worse?

(b) Any idea what could cause this?

Any advice welcome :)

I always starve mine for 24 hours and then give them cooked chicken and rice . It works 99% of the time .

(This is what my vet advises )

has he been wormed??

i did as hula suggested when tyg was here and all 3 had the runs, we starved them for a day and then cooked chicken and boiled rice was all gave them after which seemed to do the trick

fingers crossed sidney is better soon :huggles:

Mine have always had a drop of Kaolin if they're a bit runny. You can get it from the chemist. 1 x 5ml spoonful usually suits.

Could be tape worm, could be a massive infestation of round worm.

Certainly isn't right so I would worm him properly with Drontal Plus and feed him twice a day with easily digestible food, preferably steamed chicken breast with some rice for a few days.

If the diahorrea continues, then a visit to the vet is probably necessary as it may be a deep rooted infection from salmonella or such like and lack of condition in a young pup is a worry.

You can't really overfeed a puppy with the right food, so don't worry about amounts - just get him eating

Good luck and let us know how he goes on :luck: :luck:

id personally use panacur 10% liquid wormer over a 3 day course , this will also wipe out any gardia on there too , try also live natural yoghurt to increase the good bacteria in his tummy , boiled chicken in small amounts also

good luck and gentle hugs xx

I would worm him and mix a teaspoon of live yoghurt into his food for each meal for the next 24hrs..have done this for years and never had the need to starve my dog for a case of the runs.

The change of homes and dietary changes and stress can upset his gut and the balance of gut bacteria will be off, the live yoghurt will help rebalance the gut flora. If he was a bit depressed or the slightest bit off his food then I would think he needs the vet but if he was mine, I would try the above first. your call obviously and I hope he settles soon.

He could have an intolerance to something in the food, I have a friend whose bitch puppy has similar symptoms and is very skinny. She has a fat intolerance which is making life difficult for them. Worth checking out.

Personally I would go to the vet, young dogs can get dehydrated very quickly.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't give Sidney any dinner last night so he was starved from lunchtime yesterday til 10 this morning. He's still drinking ok so I'm not worried about dehydration at the moment. He's still full of energy! This morning and at lunchtime he had rice and turkey (didn't have chicken in, assume turkey not too different!) which he wolfed down and so far none of the horrible sights we had on the patio yesterday! Am hoping he's getting better. He has been wormed by the vet a couple of weeks ago so am assuming that would have been a good wormer (Mum didn't say what it was but ours get Milbemax from the same vet) and should have caught everything.

Will keep you posted. Thanks again.
