:huggles: I am collecting two beautiful male whippet puppies next week. I have kept whippets for many years but never two 8 week old pups together.

Does anyone have any good advice for me. I have been told to separate them and prevent them bonding too much with each other. Are there any tips you can share with me?

many thanks

anne

I disagree with seperating them I'm not sure why someone would recommend that  they are supposed to bond together IMO otherwise they won't be able to find their place in the pack of two, also when you're not there they will be good company for each other :huggles: they have to live together for a long long time they need to get along not become strangers

I'm no expert but do have experience of two pups together Callie and Sienna are litter sisters and I got them from babies, they are nearly 4 now.

As for training I found most things they learn from each other and you can do at the same time such as house training ect.

Other things I did seperatley one at a time and then together :D

Good luck with your new puppies :luck: :luck:

:D Good luck with the two of them, I have got two brothers and they get on fine, don't know why you have been told to keep them separated :- " Let them grow up together and THEY will sort out who is the top dog, but remember YOU should always be in control of them both, what you say should go, Just enjoy them. :p only my opinion, Diane.

Enjoy your pups, but you MUST be top dog. They can lock onto each other and ignore you. I speak from experience. Sometimes they just look at each other and take off! Mine were brother and sister and a pain to train. The second litter mates I kept were much better behaved!

It always worries me when people take on two boys, they are alright on their own, if you have entire bitches you might have problems

I think the idea of not letting them bond too closely is so that they bond more with their owner than one another, supposedly making training easier. The joy of whippets is seeing them sleep, play and run together I certainly couldnt seperate two baby whippets. I'd make sure I spent time training them individually and putting the effort in than separating them.

Good luck with them, dont forget to share the photos of them.

Its an absoulute nightmare, i started off with two sisters and just couldn't house train them as i didn know which was doing what whenever , so wishing you plent of :luck: in that dept

I think you are very brave :p

The problem with two pups together is that they can bond with one another to the exclusion of the people in the household which can make them hard to train. I've heard very mixed experiences from people who have done it, but the primary one is never again! :sweating:

Obviously some people here have done it without problems, so I'm sure you'll get good advice. If it were me I wouldn't want to separate them but I would want to spend a good deal of 1:1 time with each, including separate walks so they can socialise with people and other dogs as individuals rather than relying on one another too much.

Once you hit the teenage stage you'll have two boys who are the same age, stage and size so you'll have to keep a very firm hand on any rivalries developing. If one of them is obviously the 'boss' it will be easier than if they are equally matched, so right from the start I'd let whichever pup seems boldest take the 'top dog' position.

Personally I'd also have them neutered to take the testosterone out of the equation but I know that's a contentious issue on this board and others will disagree. :)

Good luck, I'm sure they are going to be absolutely adorable and worth all the hard work. I hope we are going to get lots of pictures when they arrive

please enjoy your pups we had two together last year :huggles: they are very loving to all members of the family . they are good mates but love to play with us and other dogs .they wont be a problem to toilet train if you take them out together. I dont believe that two pups will bond to each other and not to you  we had six pups together 25 yrs ago all were very people friendly and chose to cuddle up to us . I have found it easier with two they settle in quicker and its great to watch them play :) I wish you lots of luck with them :luck: would be nice to see some pictures when they have settled

I have 8 month old brother and sister whippets, and it has been hard work to say the least :sweating:

i have questioned my sanity on the decision to get 2 a few times but i wouldnt be without either of them now.i cant imagine seperating them completely, just cant see how its possible.

theyre like little bullets firing round your living room, with 2 everything seems faster and noisier, its a bit like shift work at first.

i cant let mine run together at all because they would just kill each other.

i make mine eat in seperate rooms or else the food doesnt touch the sides.

in the house i train seperately with one looking on from the cage.

but theyre so sweet when they cuddle up and clean each others ears

i think i got through it with a few long cool beers..lots of luck ;)

My advice would be to sign yourself into the nearest 'nut house' (w00t)

No seriously, after the first time I kept two puppies, I vowed I would never do it again - I did though 9 years later. :teehee: On the good side, they are company for each other, and there's nothing better than seeing two whippies curled round each other. It is more difficult to train them, as they distract each other, but I did manage it eventually. I wonder why anyone wouldn't want them to bond with each other :( I think that's the nicest part of having them together. Just enjoy them, I'm sure all will be fine.

i agree with you june.

as you no lolly+grace came home together last april. and i was also told on here that they would be "so into each other" that they wouldnt notice us.

but for anyone who has seen them at the track   your know that mum+dad hate walking them as they both pull for me all the time  lolly only runs the track because im at the end :- " she hates me leaving her, but she choose to bond to me, i dont know why she picked me out of the other 3 people at home :huggles: :huggles: mum used to do all the feeding so its not because i was the one to feed them. :*

given the choice lolly will be with me rather than grace :huggles:

so having 2 pups together will not spoil your bond with them  i hope you have a fab time with them and we get loads of pics (k9 rule :- " )

id have 2 together again like a shot...or 3....or 4...

We had two boys together and they have been fine, they had the odd spatt but nothing much and even though brought up the same they have completely different personalities. They love us and love cuddles  and have each other for company and do take time out on thier own now and again. House training no problem, but other training they do distract each other so one went for a walk and one trained then all change it did them good but they are happier on thier walks together. They have been separated when the one broke his leg and was in the vets overnight a few times but they were fine. Wish you luck

Good luck with your new puppies.. :luck: :luck:

I would never seperate them,...Just remember they are two individuals and treat them as such... :huggles:

I have 3 entire males together and everything is usually fine, you are bound to have one or two problems...but nothing you wont be able to resolve Im sure.

Strange that they let you have 2 but said to keep them apart

2 of the same age is hard work, ive done it more than once , but they do develope a bond like no other ,

My Harvee is really missing bullying his sister India ;) ( she has 2 wk old pups at present) , its lovely how they run and play with each other, even thugh he has several other playmates he could bully ( but Harvee is a real wimp and wouldnt dare pick on anyone else ;) )

2 of their brothers live together , and they are so diff, in personalitys , , They are now 2 1/2 and still get on well , most of the time  , Neither have been neutered

Good luck with them
