On another thread it was asked what the criteria the british Judges have to meet to be able to judge Whippets and award Challenge Certificates.

So not to side track that thread I opened another.

Judges have to meet a minimum criteria to Judge Whippets at Club Open show level before they would be even considered to award Challenge Certificates at a Championship show level.

I have copied a Breed Club show criteria to give you some idea of what criteria is needed.

This is a minimum and even on meeting the grade you will be placed on the Clubs list but this will not automatically mean that you either get to Judge a Breed club Open show or be invited to award Challenge Certificates.

Judging List Criteria.

LIST A1

The names of people who are supported by the Club to award CC’s in the breed and who are already approved by the kennel club.

LIST A2

The names of people who would be supported by the Club, if they were invited to award CC’s in the breed. The people on this list meet the criteria for A3 list and have already been assessed and approved y the K.C to award CC’s in the breed.

LIST A3

The names of people who would be supported by the Club, if they were invited to award CC’s.

Whippet Breeders/Exhibitors; The candidate must have been involved with the breed for a period of not less than ten years and have been a regular exhibitor of Whippets, The Candidate must:-

Have bred and/or owned at least three Whippets when they obtained their first entry into the KC stud Book.

Have judged a minimum of 350 Whippets or 75 classes of whippets at Open show level.

Have Judged a Breed Club Show

Have stewarded for a minimum period of three years

Have attended a Whippet Breed Seminar/Workshop

Have completed the KC rules and regulation exam.

List B part 1

The names of people whom the club consider qualified to Judge at a breed club show.

The candidate must have been involved with the breed for a period of not less than seven years and to currently be a regular exhibitor of Whippets, qualifying at least three whippets for the KC stud book. The candidate must have judged a minimum of 150 whippets or 40 classes of whippets at open show level and must have attended a Whippet breed seminar/Workshop.

Good idea mark, I almost done the same.

With the lists above most clubs have the same A1,2 & 3 but the B list can vary quite a bit.

It would be interesting to see another list please Tracey, as the Breed clubs do 'differ' although the general outline is done via KC guidelines.

I think most clubs are the same apart from the amount of dogs judged and years participation in whippets

I hasten to add this is the criteria for BREED SPECIALISTS for the B list

Midland whippet asks that you have judged a minimum of 25 classes and 100 dogs , to have at least 1 whippet in th Stud Book and to have had an active particiment of showing whippets for 6 years at least , this is for our B list 8)

A1 2 and 3 are the same

Thanks Mark, I had just written it all out for the English/American thread so you have saved me a job of typing it. As Annie says it does depends on the clubs, it is their list and their criteria.

You have missed the C list that is for people just starting on their judging career, again as per club.

The kennel club require a breed pacific.

To go through A2 you need three assessments and I think 2 club shows for whippets as they are in band E.

There is also fast tracking for people who give C.Cs in three or more hound breeds, if they pass they only need to have judged half the number of dogs usually required.

I am a firm believer in the 'old fashioned way' but each to there own.

Me too , most of them have no interest in whippets whatsever (w00t) and just use us t help them get to judge Groups

We have so many breed people who give CCs ( or are waiting to be asked ). Gaps between one apppointment and another can be years  .

I dont mind the `odd ` alrounder but do object to people just using whippets cos they think we are an easy breed to judge , Usually they just hang around the breed rings for a few shows before they judge and then place much the same

One hound judge about to give ccs for the first time asked me if it was true that brindles were usually better quality than fawns . (w00t)

I just laughed and walked off . needless to say I didnt give them an entry ( and I was showing brindles too ;) ) , but I dont require the opinion of someone who hasnt a clue about Whippets ;) thankyou very much o:)

What would be interested would be to know how long it actually took people to Judge,

A, First Breed Club Open show

B, First Championship Show with CC's

Personally, I judge my First Whippets class in 1996 and have my first breed club this year.

I judged my first set of whippet classes in 1992

I judged whippets at a group show in 1995

I had my first breed show (midland Whippet ) in 1999

My second in 2001

After 500+ whippets later

my first set of tickets in 2005  Well half a set i only did Dogs

I have both sets next year :D

Mark if you go to a thread 'I've been threatened' you will see a reminder. (w00t)

I'd like to know what you think about the juding criteria in the UK?

Is it too easy, too difficult, about right???

What would you change?

For people starting out i have noticed a bit of a catch 22 situation - lots of General Open Shows want people on the lists (C and obviously above), but in order to get on the lists, certain numbers have had to have been judged.

It would be interesting to hear your opinions

For JoK

I think you are a bit mixed.

The Whippet Club of Wales Criteria for the C List is : For aspirant judges who have shown an interest in the breed and have the support of WCofW. I believe the KC wants club/socities to pick from lists but IMO you should judge the breed on several occasions before being put onto a list. This way gaining experience/knowledge of the breed.

To get on a C list you need to apply to the Whippets Clubs with your involvement in the Breed and other Breeds over a period of time, if the Club thinks that you are genuinely interested in the breed and have attended a breed Workshop I think it is highly likely that you would be placed on the C list. You don't need to be on them all.

Do I think it is difficult? Yes. Should it be? Yes

Maybe this is just me been a little bit one sided, (I had to serve my apprenticeship so should others, kind of attitude) It was always said that you serve about a ten year judging apprenticeship before giving tickets, this seems to be a good average looking at the replies so far.

What is a shame is that when I started Judging you normally got to Judge other Breeds at open shows that gave you more judging experience. This is not likely to be the case now.

Thanks Tracey - obviously i must be losing it

However, as i said - if you are looking for people who have judged on several occasions before putting on list - it is still a catch 22 if the General Open Shows are looking for people off the lists.

Maybe im not being very clear - wouldn't surprise me!
