After about 12 yrs of (ab)use my vac (Electrolux) has seen better days & we need a new one. Before I go & spend lots of money I want some advice from doggy people.

I was decided on a Dyson but 2 people have said theirs fell to bits.

Someone else said Kirby is great

My friend has just won a Morphy Richards vac for pet owners & says it's brill

I'm now totally confused so HELP please.

Which one should I get (& which one should I avoid) We've only got 2 carpets in the house, the rest is lino or wood so it would need to be one that could cope with all surfaces & upholstery too.

Thanks, all comments welcome :)

I have an Henry JT great for hard floors and for carpet and gets right to the edges, you can use it with a bag or not and you can wash out the bucket and the dust filter which is great when you have dogs  had it quite a few years now and never had any trouble with it :)

im a bit of a hoover queen!!! but the best i havehad is the TYPHOON 3 stage hepa filter, i have to have a machine that can do lino and carpets with good tools and i found this in a catalogue from a sunday mag? it was around £60 and i can say its the best £60 ive spent as it gets all the hair up and reduces allergens ( im allergic to pets and their hair etc as well as dust etc) you wash the filter so no clogging etc, ive gone through my details and its available in the freemans catalogue

im a dyson fan, excellent suction and great for the stairs, picks up dog hairs you didnt know was there :))

I use an upright Panasonic.

I've had various one's over the years, but found this one the best!

It's not too heavy, therefore easy to use on the stairs, the tools are good & it's great on carpets & wooden floors.Last one lasted for at least 10 years, which is pretty good considering the abuse it gets (w00t)

I tried out a friends dyson once & hated it.Far to heavy & the nozzle was crap & awkward to use

I'd recommend a Dyson cylinder type... had mine about 6 years now and it's still going strong. The Turbo head is brilliant, sometimes sold as an extra but worth buying.... the non turbo head is ok for vinyl and laminates but rubbish on carpets.

Have used a Dyson upright and hated it....found it really hard work and got bad backache after using it. :(

I have had two RUBBISH Dysons

Checked on the Which Magazine vacuum cleaner report recently and got the Bosch Pro Pet which was one of their Best Buys, and it has been excellent, light, quiet, long easily retractable cable, fabulous suction - and also only cost £109.00!!!!

i had a DYSON also, and never again  i have now got a VAX TURBOFORCE and very please with it also i got a PETVAX(DRY AND WET)

I like HENRY'S too

Ive had quite a few makes of Hoover - the latest is my Dyson Animal in bright purple (w00t) its still going strong and I like the special attachment for pet hairs - its great on the stairs. Gets about 9 out of 10 for me anyway. Ill admit it is not one of the lightest hoovers.

I like it - till I see a better one.

I used to have a cylinder Vax - it lasted years but hardly used the wet claner - too messy. and was hard to pull around.

the cheep upright cilander one in argos is brill its an elecrtaluxs its cheep and shifts every hair and dust no problem I hover twice a day with my lot so it gets a lot of use and the flters are all washeball and it comes with spares and tools on the back

I have a Dyson and I think I have had every part replaced !!!!! At one time it was a regular feature to see the man coming down the garden path with his little bit of test carpet under his arm. It's ok whilst they keep replacing the bits but I'm not sure I would ever have another one.

At the shop we have an industrial Hoover and I'm not all that enamoured with that either but we did get it very cheap because we knew someone ;) so I suppose I should not complain.

I have a Miele cat and dog cylinder (pull a long) I always had an upright hoover before including a Dyson but this is the best hoover for animal hairs I have ever came accross. I never liked cylinders before but this has a turbo brush and it just feels like an upright. It has all kinds of attachments and is great for doing stairs. The guarantee is great as well. My brother and my mum has the same hoover and they love it as well. I have four very hairy cats and it works wonders with the hairs! I have had it around three years and have never had one problem with it. It is not the cheapest but I have found it to be the best I have ever came accross. If you shop around on the internet you can get a good deal.

My Mum had a Sebo which was an upright before she got her Miele and the Sebo which had the best write up in your dog and Your Cat was not what it was made out to be it fell over every time you pulled the nozzle out to do the stairs as the weight of it was a nightmare and it was very expensive and over rated.

I have recently purchased Dyson Pet. Excellent in every way.

ive had a dyson04 for the last 5 years and never had a problem with it! its fab and those stray hairs dont stand a chance! i suppose its like all things sometimes u just get a faulty one and u rarely hear about the good stuff just when it fails. i would always have dyson now, i know they are abit dear but they r worth every penny!

I have always had bad luck with Dysons and would never buy one again :- " I have had two and they were always breaking down and clogging up and I think the latest models are made with really flimsy cheap plastic! Though they are not a cheap hoover. But that is only my view and there does seem to be many Dyson fans on here :)

If you want a 'food' hoover then I recommend a Labrador!!! boom boom

Can't remember what make my thing is (begins with an 'M'...Miele??) but it has a 'hospital' grade filter because my OH is allergic to dogs. It's one of those 'trail about' ones because I hate uprights. It's ok but to lift hair it always has to be set at the maximum power level which is pretty noisy. I've heard that the Dyson Pet is good though.

try the one i have fiona as it has a hepa filter system , im quite badly allergic but really does the job! details in my earlier post , btw zoomie is looking very handsome as always!!!

I'm a Dyson 'Animal' fan here too, great animal-hair-lifting power. I do agree, though, that the caseing seems quite flimsy, I suspect that will break long before the motor gives up.

Im a dyson animal fan too :)) although i didnt have it that long before i blew the motor up (w00t) (w00t) but that nice man came round checked it all out & told me i needed to wash the filter every so many months  that was the cause :b ....now my hose has split  so gotta get a new one of those
