congratulations all. Did the shows go ahead in victoria today? Way to hot for me. Where I live (near avalon airport) the temp got to 47.6 degrees celcius (117.68 fahrenheit on the old scale). The clam shell wading pool managed to hold 8 whippet puppies, one adult whippet and 2 jack russell terriers :sweating: Wish I had of taken a pic, it was a tight squeeze but they stayed cool in the water nonetheless.
Tommorow will be better. 25 oC or so.

I spent the day with Mum and Dad as we don't have air conditioning at our house in Ballarat ... they are about 10 to 15 minutes from Avalon and the heat outside today was putrid!! There is a lot to be said for building a double brick house that has two air conditioners and a water cooler in it!!!

The Classic Dog Show was cancelled (thank god) The group 4 judge Julie Aspinall is currently receiving radiation treatment for cancer ... how would she have gone standing in that heat today??

Apparently people still turned up to show their dogs (temperatures recorded that way have been ranging from high 40's with some people claiming thier temperature gauges on thier property hit 50 degrees celcius!!!) ... how anyone can travel with their dogs in this in the heat with the expectation of showing them in the weather we are experiencing is mind blowing to me ... they can't possibly call themselves dog lovers as they certainly don't have the welfare of their dogs at heart :rant: :rant: Perhaps other states should have done the same thing for those exhibitors who are too stupid to make the right decision :angry: Don't get me wrong I'll show in hot weather but when its bordering on 50 degrees??? Get serious people!!

Anyway tomorrow is still on and weather is going to be in the cool 20's! (Thank god!) ... I'll be there to watch as I live a 2 minute walk around the corner and Dad is judging the Working group and Best In Show, but I would expect that not many people will be there as there are a lot of people out there fighting bushfires in their areas, or who are cut of from making it to Ballarat because of road closures related to the bushfires.

Okay rant is over ... but please please please people ... stay safe whether you are dealing with extreme heat and fires in the south or the rain and storms up north ... what crazy weather we are having!!

Know why any show could of been called off of late? Here only 30 people have died due to heat. In Qld have heard of no deaths, & the water is only 20foot deep. So whats the problem? A bit of warmth & a slight rain. In Vic. some fires, & only 120f, in old scale. Last count 25 dead in the fires, could go to 40!!!!!!!

Sadly, all deaths are real. Just as bad is the brainless who still went to the shows, even if they were cancelled.

I was a teenager when ash wednesday happened. Yesterday was worse....much worse. Terrible for the people and terrible for all the burned animals that need to be euthanised .

These fires etc are not good have heard that people in Victoria? lost there dogs/house to the fires and also received burns themselves they had pyrenan (sp?) mountain dogs!!!

Cannot believe we have come home from 4 days boating to hear such devastation over the ditch :unsure:

Please keep safe all those in Victoria - it seems unreal that these fires have claimed so many homes (just watching Sky watch - just under 700 homes gone - 66 lives gone & I hate to even think what the animal mortality is) but I did hear the Bernese people, GSP people, terriere people & others have lost their dogs, plus a boarding kennel got wiped out.......

Keep safe Victorians and also to the Queenslanders with all these terrible floods - I have no idea what the big fella upstairs is thinking - fire on one state, flooding in another - it is devastation to the max!

I was on line with Kirislin last night (The Whippet Forum). It was after midnight, she was very frightened, and was getting ready to evacuate. Healesville area (I think). She has not been back online today. Would love to hear from anyone who knows how she is.

Hope all those that live in at risk area's are safe and well.

At Ballarat Dog Club today, over $2000 was raised to help those people who have lost their houses, kennels and in some cases thier dogs. The storys were devestating to say the least. Some were lucky, some dobe friends lost thier shedding in Kinglake but managed to evacuate. They came back to find their house was only one of two that was left Others had their dogs in trailers ready to go, only to have their house explode in front of them... they ran to their outlying paddocks dropped to the ground, and could only watch with horror as the fire engulfed thier dog float... others managed to get their dogs out ... but just barely ... there are stories of melted bumper bars on cars ... they can be replaced ... sadly the animals and human life cannot... kind of puts things into perspective...

Just been watching the news and saw how dreadful it is In Victoria and other areas

I do hope the fires die out soon and no more lives are lost , up to nearly 100 and many with terrible burns . not to mention all animals and wildlife ,

We are so lucky in the Uk in not having extreems of any thing

I cannot find any info about fire in Healsville, i guess no news means good news.

Gail and Byerley live in the fire prone area on outskirts of Melbourne, but as far as i know there has not been anything up there. Couple of Whippet breeders live in Pakenham area, which I think is now under control or put out. But there are some Whippet people living in Seymour way.

I have been checking on all the dogs I bred; all are fine as far as I know.

I am so worried for people and dogs in Victoria and now in NSW as well - it is SO unjust that we have this continual rain and excess water up here whilst everything down there burns. I am just continually crying about what I'm seeing on the news.

Please God - send them the rain!

Angus - are you guys ok? I heard Nar Nar Goon mentioned on the news yesterday?

My heart goes out to all that have been devastated by these fires, we stopped complaining about the rain and flooding on Saturday and starting wishing for the rain to go down to Victoria and NSW to help place these fires under control and stop all the loss of life, human and animal.

I hope that those that have been affected are well supported by everyone and the all those that are still in danger stay safe and out of harms way.

Thank you to those that are keeping us informed on the dog world people in these area's.

I just read on another list that Peter & Peter (Byerley) are all fine, but nothing on anyone else. I got the devastating news yesterday that I nearly lost my very good friends Vicki Moritz & Russell Glenn in Marysville - I got my first Ridgebacks off Vicki 23 years ago. Unfortunately they lost their house (which was their weekender) but also lost their two Ridgebacks Red (Rekaylahn Kwa Red at Ujamaa - IMP UK) and Blue, and their Abyssinian cat Mr Zeus. They are devastated as they made it into the car but then had to sit and watch the house burn. Russ tried to go back in to get the dogs but the intensity and heat were just too much. But they are also aware that their neighbours did not make it. When they finally were able to walk to the local oval the firefighters there thought they had risen from the ashes and couldn't believe they'd made it.

I am so glad they are still with us, and I sat last night and hugged my Red kids including my doofus Fanning who is his father's son - I was lucky enough to have spent last weekend in Melbourne and had time with Red, Blue and Mr Zeus - RIP my lovelies you will never be forgotten.

Keep Vicki in your prayers - she is without her precious Ridgebacks for the first time in 35 years.

Condolences to all those who have lost lives, loved ones, their animal companions and property. It is just a bit hard to comprehend the magnitude of this disaster at the moment- especially as the sad news keeps rolling in. Lana- Angus and family are all ok in Nar Nar Goon.

Listening the radio, I have just heard that someone broke into a Geelong CFA unit on Saturday night and stole items. What is wrong with some people :angry:
