before we do our first walk this week, i have a couple of questions,

1. how long or far should 12week old pups be walked?

ie. 10 mins, 5mins thiere 5mins back

2. how many times should they be walked?

ie. if they go to the garden 6 times a day should they now be walked 6 times a day? or should they be walked once with 5 garden trips, and then add a walk on every few weeks?

3. where should they walk?

ie.pack order and lead traning wise, behind or by my side. (iv been letting them pic at the min as long as their not in front)

4. should their first walk be up and down the street or somwhere nice, beach/woods?

(thinking street is quiet and familiarish, beach/wood new strange)

just really wanted a second opinion on this, any help advice would be great :thumbsup:

and, if you have a harness on them, do you put a small collar on to for the tags?

When I first took Grace out she was very nervous of the great big world, so it was just tiny walks around the Green outside the house, with lots of treats and encouragement. I think they will let you know what they can cope with.

with our first whippy we took her to a walk that we knew well - early evening so we knew that it would be quiet - and we just let her off her lead straight away and walked on as normal - no fuss or excitement as we were afraid she would get all hyped up and run!!

she just followed us and enjoyed her surroundings x

we stayed out for about an hour but spent most of the time standing still as there were so many new smells for her to investigate.

all the others have just been plonked down with the group - again no leads and no fuss - they have all just stayed close to the pack

none of our dogs are really walked on leads - they jump in the car and jump out the other end.

they all have individual training sessions on leads so that they know how to behave and walk to heal.

if you worry and panic so will your pups - just enjoy it :thumbsup:

We took Zulu on the green at the back of the house with the other dogs for his first walk and he took to it like a duck to water. Then we took him to the headlands and the beach with Pax. He was a bit unsure at first but soon started to enjoy it.

Now their favorite walk is the woods where they can run off the lead and investigate all the smells. As Tracy said, they seem much better off the lead than on and follow much more readily.

Skye has been out for 3 walks now - 2 with Phoebe and once on her own ) . She was more than happy to follow Phoebs and was really confident, more unsure on her own and spent some time following me immediately behind my feet :lol: . I used treats to encourage her forward if she stopped and she spent most of the walk trotting along either in front or on either side of me on a loose lead o . Need to work on keeping her on one side at a time but at this early stage I think it's best to get them moving along happily first and then work on the finer points :thumbsup:

I would stick to quiet familiar routes for now and mostly staight lines as they won't have steering yet :- " . You'll know from how it goes when it's ok to start going to busier areas - don't do so much that they get frightened but keep challenging them with new things )

If you are using a harness then best to have a collar with a tag on as well in case of mishaps .

I read somewhere that walks should be 5 mins per month of their age twice a day but I find this really impractical at this stage as it takes a while to get anywhere and it can't be to do with energy as after each walk Skye has gone mad round the garden (w00t) . Would be interested what other people think )

12 weeks old , and they shouldnt really go further than 5 mins at a time IMO Just sit by the roadside and let them observe all that is going on . I give free axcess to the garden at all times ,

At just 3 months old to much exercise and road walking is not good forpuppies , I dont take mine out on a proper lead walk till nearer 5 months, Maybe to the shops being carried most of the way and let them walk back home . You wouldnt expect a toddler to walk miles would you :cheers:

Dont let them pull you as this will do damgae to their shoulders,hopefully you have a proper `swallow tail` collar or at least a wide one .as their necks and throat are very senstive.

By you side is where they should be walking , nice and calmly too , but then we are talking mad whipet puppy arnt we :lol:

thanks jax thats abit more helpfull, i have a 2year old who wont walk far so i think it will be up and down the street to start with. by my side :thumbsup: nice gentle pace

We take ours aout and about as soon as there old enghe but we were given a puppy bag so they could do a litte wlak and then have somewere to rest if they needed to I worked brill we could take them out with the big guys for a few hours and not worry about overwalking them and it maid a big differnce to them there bombe proof and atke everything in there stide

troubel is both Ninny and indy will still try and get in the bag if thyey see it about and Indy nearly 3 years old lol. we did lafe when we were given it but it was a godsend maid life much easer

for lead training obviously you need to start with the collar and I always start with a light weight velvet cats collar, after wearing this for a couple of days i then introduce the lead as a toy as something to play with followed closely by attaching it to the collar and letting the pup pull it around, i then change to the collar it will be wearing when going out

the next thing I do is sit on the grass verge a few times out side my house watching the traffic go by having a cuddle talkin to the pup and giving the odd little tit bit for a couple of nights then I get the pup to walk the 30' to the verge normally with my wife infront where I sit calling the pup, all this bit can be done whilst waiting for innocs once they have all been done follow up with a couple of 2 min walks full of praise then building upto bigger walks(like to the pub)

altho I have always been into lurchers and terriers I always find the very best way to socialise them is to take them to the pub there so many people want to make a fuss(and its the only time you dont get a slap for asking a woman if she wants to see your puppy :- " )

also dont forget stock breaking

When Austin went on his first walk I think he only managed 10 minutes and then he was tired. It's tired for them mentally too.

But don't be fooled by the increase in energy when you get home. Austin always ahs a bit of a mad dash around the house when he gets home!!

And if you're trying to train the puppy to walk on a loose lead next to your side, once he is used to the lead you may want to march out on your walk rather than go at a slow walk. They learn a lot quicker to stay by your side if you are walking out rather than dawdling.
