Oh yes Claire lots of pics, its next week I can't believe how fast its gone

the colour genetics site has some pics of china/wall eye here

That is really interesting, how strange that wall eyes crop up like that. I always thought they went with the merle gene. Do whippets carry that gene? I know blues can have a pale grey eye, the same colour at their coat.

My black dog and bitch both had really dark brown eye, their blue siblings had grey eyes. Odd.

As you know, Ros and Grover are litter mates yet Ros has the richest dark brown eyes and Grover has much lighter grey eyes, the same colour as his blue bits:

I don't find the eyes of Esty's dogs surprising, lighter eyes tend to go with lighter coat colours and vice versa

as for the wall eye, can't that sometimes be a mutation when it occurs in coat colours and breeds other than the usual (e.g. merles, huskies) maybe even a somatic mutation (localised, not inheritable)?

There is a breeder in the west country who has had 2 litters each with a wall eye i will try and find out the blood lines

The wall eye is seen mostly in white or clown face Whippets. As it is considered a serious fault walleyed dogs are not usually bred on, and if breeders get one they most likely do not advertise the fact.

One of the rescue girls i had here few years ago had a wall eye. She was almost pure white and the other eye was black.

The handsome wee fella has found a new home (I was really tempted and phoned up but - not surprisingly - he's already off to his new home) :)

Dont forget that the KC register was open until around 1970 - 1980 ish and dogs who were of Whippet type could be added and registerd as pure bred, perhaps the gene came in like that.

i have found out a bit of info on a breeder who has had 2 litters that have produced wall eyes and it seems to bemixed colour litters blacks and blues pesent. The lines on the pedigree are interresting i wont print them but you pm me if you want to know. Its very interesting how this crops up with various colours.

The pale blue eye in collies, Great Danes etc. is connected to the merle gene. Whippets do not have this gene. The wall eye i have seen in Whippets was quite bright blue and seems to be connected to the gene that limits distribution of pigment - leaves the coat white. Most wall eyed whippets have lot of white especially on their faces near the blue eye. What other colour of the coat the dog has is not relevant, it is the lack of pigment in the are that causes the eye not to be pigmented. This is not caused by any of the dilute genes, as they would affect ALL pigment in the dog, and the wall eyed Whippets usually have one eye blue and the the dark brown.

Phew! I've been thinking about that dog for days, trying to think of a way I could wing another puppy! At least I can put that out of my mind now. Glad he's gone to a new loving home. :D
