Ive just seen this advert on the net and im a little confused by it http://www.pets4homes.co.uk/pets4homes/hom...0257548005AE8F0

Can somebody please explain to me how you get a wall eye in a pedigree whippet, ive been around the lurcher/whippet/working dog world most of my life and know that usualy wall eyes come from Collie breeding, does anyone know the breeding of this whippet.

Im not being funny about this advert and im not causing the breeder or the puppy any trouble id just curious, i hope he finds a new home.

As i've always understood it only Collies and Corgies carry the wall eye gene.

hence why lurchers somtimes show the wall eye.

I think Dalmations carry it too, but i have never seen it in a whippet

Sorry cant answer your question ,but hes flipping gorguse wall eye an all   if only i wasnt just about to start up a new buissnes i would have had him

Years ago there was a Dondelayo bitch in the IOW that had a blue eye! That was in the seventies, but I do remember it as it was a talking point at the time.

Gosh isn't he lovely! Wish I hadn't seen that now! I'm totally smitten... he'd have to be named 'Bowie'. But with 10 ferrets and 2 dogs we've gotta draw the line somewhere unfortunately.

I would hazard a guess that this chap is not pure(got a collie, or suchlike, a few generations back).

I think you can get pure whippets with wall eye.

Lesley had one in her gorgeous black and white

litter last year didn't she ?

I agree, the Dondelayo bitch was a pure whippet, the wall eye had no pigmentation on the eye lids, the normal eye, which was dark brown had dark eye lids. I can't remember her registered name, so long ago.

I think that is what is called a China blue eye over here in Canada, and of course it is a disqualification within the breed standard. I have first hand knowledge of such a whippet because in the 8 years before we acquired the beginnings of our whippet breeding program my son Mick and I actively rescued a total of five whippets needing rescue. Amongst those five were two 8 week old littermates who were going to be euthanized by their breeder what is now, I realize, 26 years ago! The bitch had one lovely brown and one china blue eye, while her litter brother was a monorchid. We actually paid the breeder not to euthanize them and gave her $300 each for the dogs. While Mom was Canadian bred she was out of two American parents, and Dad was also American. Over the decades since we learned of a number of other china blue eyed dogs out of that same sire, so there was obviously something genetic.

We spayed and neutered Laura and Jack and they lived long wonderful lives with us. Both were over 14 when they died and they buried beside our first whippet, also a rescue who lived to be nearly 17.

The china blue eye does not affect vision and anyone interested in the pup on the website should not expect any problems whatsoever in terms of vision. In those days we were field trialing Irish Setters (a breed my grandfather bred for nearly 70 years) and Laura's best friend was my Irish Setter Shelagh out of Dad Morry's breeding. As we trained Shelagh Laura practiced in the fields with her, mimicing everything she did. When Shelagh was preparing to do her final field trial for her title we brought Laura along to the last practice, just to show others at the trial our amazing whippet. The two dogs performed the entire exercise as a working pair, flushing, pointing, standing under gun and retrieving the birds at the end of the exercise. Old field dog handlers had never seen a retrieving whippet before and many urged me to trial Laura separately, but we never did (there were poodles who were excellent in those days but everything else was a gun dog).

One Ball Jack as we called Laura's brother was distinguished by the fact he barked only twice in his life -- both times to alert us to the fact our flock of goats had broken out of our 5 acre pasture and were on the highway -- but he was most valued for his ability to eradicate squirrels and chipmunks, who can be terribly destructive if they get into a house, from a friend's property which was plagued with them. Each year they borrowed Jack for a weekend and he set off purposefully to rid the land of anything rodent so they could enjoy a summer without these pests. He also ensured our property remained squirrel free for the whole of his life with us.

Its a shame you cant remember her name as somebody somewhere might have a photo of her. A friend of mine who breeds Gypsie cobs and has generations of his own breeding had a wall eye 2 years ago in a foal but it was a half wall eye that followed the foals markings.

Did you know the pedigree of those two whippets, did they go back to Dondelayo? Interesting.

Their parents are on my computer. There is no Dondelayo whatsoever. The first English dog you see anywhere on either side of the pedigree and it is about six or seven generations back is Greenbrae Barndance who is distantly behind many American lines. The littermates came from Stoney Meadows/Morshor crossed breeding stock and we learned anecdotally that there were several other dogs from related lines that had the same eye. The bitch with the blue eye was beautifully conformed and had she had two normal brown eyes her breeder would certainly have kept her, shown her to a title, and bred from her. She was just lovely and very clever.

That is exactly like the Dondelayo bitch!!!!!!!!!!! I have gone on the whippet archives and cannot find a name that rings a bell, but then not all Donedelayo's wil be on there.

Eye colour is not mentioned in our KC standard. Even more interesting!!!!!!!!!!!

This is from the Whippet Archives http://thewhippetarchives.net/standard.php it compares the various breed standards AKC KC CKC etc. (I particularly love the fact that in Canada "Gay ears are incorrect and should be severely penalized.")

Anyway I think the differences are really interesting.

what lovely, interesting stories, love Jack's name ! I like the look of the china blue eyes and , being a big fan, would call him BOWIE too !!!

I had a pup in the first litter I ever bred in 1988 with a blue eye. His sire went back to Dondelayo also.

100% beautiful

Thats right Ann Mabel was the only one on the litter with a blue eye, I don't know how it happens but she is pure whippet so it obviously does, maybe it has something to do with the white colour?
