I`m out of the game over twenty years, but looking back and even recently reading some old `Whippet News`, there was surely something amiss with the BESAPS breed. They burst onto the scene from nowhere and the one litter made a huge impact beating the best pedigree dogs that were racing at the time. What I would like to ask those of you that have raced since those days is, has any other litter made such an impact on the racing scene from either established racing or showing lines ? I very much doubt it ! Peter Scott was familar with both codes and he could smell a rat, as could (can`t remember his first name) Mr.Pook who also raced non-peds as well and I remember him telling me that the first day he saw them run, he knew they wern`t what they were meant to be. They had big flat backs, just like greyhounds.

I`m sure there was and still are `jealous` people out there, but at the end of the day, everyone wants to compete on a level playing field.

Here`s some of the `greats` I saw race.

16LBS. BAMBI, BEETLE, PETITE FLEUR, HIDEAWAY, TOPAZ.

18LBS. SAUCY SYLPH, MITZIE, RUNAWAY, SARA, WICKHAM WOMBAT

20LBS. JIMMY RIMMER, TEDDY FLASH, CARLY, BECKS BOOTS, RAG TRADE.

22LBS. OUR LISA, PIPPA, DILLON, STAR, COUNTRY SQUIRE.

24LBS. PICKETTY WITCH, SILVER STREAM, GUMPY, BLAZER, VELVET.

26LBS. WHITE WIZARD, STREAKER, KONDOR, JAKE.

28LBS. TIPPER, MERLIN, PIED PIPER.

30LBS. YOUNG PATCHES, SWEPSTONE BANNER, COMET, KOKO.

Some great memories typing those names.

ted and cynthia attkinson had some of young patches pups they used him as a stud to thier little bitch tuppence can't remember her racing or kc name. pups to come from them were paddys patch a parti couloured dog kept by ted & cynthia they kept a bitch aswell but can't remember her name. i myself had gillbys patch a nice fawn and white parti couloured bitch in fact she was the last whippet i had she sadly died in 1993 old and blind sad day for me. but i wouldn't say the likes of pennylane were any faster and she was out of besaps markwiss and our other besap dogs weren't charlies angel was a fast little thing though she'd beat anything over a 50yrd dash. had anoyher young patches pup called battlecat more affectioatley known as cringer. does any one remember a line of ring tailed whippets ?

just had another look at the list of dogs you posted was dillon a brindle?? you see we had a good dog called dillon who we raced as dillon was a bit of a nutter though couldn't keep him kenneled with the others as he would fight.

we've been out of the game about 15 yrs now glad found this site brings back some good memories .

I seem to think that DILLON was a brindle. Just can`t remember who owned him ? He was just starting to get past his best days when I started racing. There wasn`t as many Opens then, so he was always winning at the Surrey W.R.C. at Fetchem near Leatherhead. Anyone else remember that track ? It was a permenent one with a great 350 yard, 4 bend distance. There was a social club there as well, that used to do well in the bar on race days.

it wasn't my dads dillon then don't think he ever raced at surrey unless i was too young to remember!!

I think Tuppence might have raced as Dry Sherry (KC Twilight Memories) - at least that is what I have got in my database as being the dam of Gilby Patch & Paddy's Patch. I wasn't racing then so have no personal knowledge.

I have got WCRCh Dillon as being fawn but I'm not sure where I got that from so it could be wrong, especially if I got that from a photograph. It's sometimes difficult to tell.

thanks judy you are right tuppence did race as dry sherry funny isn't it that once you hear a name then it all comes back . was along time ago though. :)
