Later this year (in fact 21st April) will be the 40th Anniversary of the formation of the WCRA – the anniversary of the first race meeting will not be until 2010.

We have an opportunity to celebrate this fact and so at this early stage I’m look for suggested events (or other ways) of celebrating.

It will be possible, with your help, to organise the sort of event you think has been missing from our calendar, or the repeat of an ‘old event’ ie Championships over 285 yards bends or a return to an ‘old’ venue. A Whippet show may be with height groups or weight group as classes.

Give this some thought and lets start a ‘thread’ on the matter.

I take it public hangings and floggings aren't an option? :- "

I don't really have any ideas - I stopped having ideas when I realised that a change is as good as arrest in whippet sport

However - I'm willing to help with the organising if you do come up with something - as long as it doesn't involve actually doing anything of course! Not really - just ask :))

285 yard bend is easily achievable at Newmarket - in fact you could do 3 bend racing - something novel indeed :)

I reckon there ought to be a back to front open (or champs (w00t) ), so the losers win and obviously the winners lose ....as it's very easy to forget in most cases our slower dogs only go to opens/champs to make up the numbers and get whooped :b .......

The WCRA organised some inter-clubs many years ago didn't they?

I have to say that one of the most enjoyable whippet events I have attended was the Charity Open hosted at Moreton by June and Maureen. What made it great was that the racing was on the Saturday, and after that, we had FUN!!!!!! Many people camped over and it would be great to incorporate with the Jun/Aug Champs. Get the serious stuff over , have a great bash in the club-house on Sat night (no early starts) and have a fun dog show on Sun, kids events, footy match, raffles, treasure Hunt, whatever you like on the Sunday. Make a great week-end of it, but be flexible and move the main event so that we can all enjoy a week-end away?

I have also just had a thought that each club could arrange a mini fun event or stall to take the pressure off of a small commitee

Thanks for the input so far.

The date is likely to be over a Bank Holiday Weekend - may be May 2010 - so there is a possibility of a 3 day get together Sat, Sun & Mon.

Venue unlikely to be Newmarket - other sites are big enough for a 285 yds bends. Also 300 yds 3-bends - or even 400 yds 4-bends are all 'on the cards' - if you think it would be suitable.

Devil-take-the-hindmost event also possible, or consolation racing, or Plate and Purse racing after the first round.

One of the days may be taken up with by a Championship Race meeting or it may be a Charity Open.

I'm at CRUFTS on the Descover Dogs Whippet Stand (H38) on Sunday. If your there and want to discuss this come and finf me in Hall 3.

There are 2 Bank holiday weekends in May Rob. Do you mean the first or the second one? There are already opens booked for both weekends.

IMO any celebrations should be organised by the WCRA its a shame 1 of the champs couldnt of been part of a long weekend of events run by the WCRA.

Are we talking about the 40th anniversary of the formation (this year) or the first race meeting (2010) ?

I am now in a state of confusion....................

All I will say is we are up for a big party whenever it is    ;)

I would imagine we are having a two year in advance warning for the event ;)

I still think incorpaorating with a Champs in the summer is a top ticket

It is suggested to be May 2010 - so yes there is a couple of years.

However, that gives us a chance to organise a 'big event'.

Everything will need WCRA approval - so you could say it will be organised by them - but they would like to know what us racers would like.

If over 3 days it could be Champs on the Saturday, Limited show (& party) on the Sunday, Interclub (or similar) on the Monday. If there were two days of racing would you enter both if they were two days apart?

What do you think of a WCRA Championship meeting on a Saturday?

 good idea to run the champs racing on the saturday  then folk can enjoy the rest of the weekend

i think a fith champ's at 180yrd 4 or 5 whight groups runing to a mian final and 3rd & 4th run a cons final :teehee:

Well, first of all thanks for asking us all Rob. We have plenty of time to arrange something, or at least plant the seed for discussion with the WCRA. I think they are normally up for celebrating this sort of occasion, and ideas from everyone is a great idea.

I like Jason's idea of a longer distance Champs - and I personally wouldn't mind a Champs on a Saturday. I think we will probably get the arguement that some people work on Saturdays - but with enough notice, I'm sure most people would be able to get one Saturday off. A whole weekend of entertainment sounds good to me  I'm with Jo on that one :teehee: The 2nd May Bank Holiday at the end of May would be near to the date the Champs is normally held at the beginning of June, and would normally be a straight - so that would seem like a good time

Perhaps Whippet Rescue charity racing on Monday, or maybe for a cancer research charity would be good. I think most of us have someone close to us, or know someone who has been affected by cancer sometime in their lives

Keep the ideas coming peeps - and maybe we can get something arranged

(w00t) ive already got my 40th anniversary trophy (in 2008)................. so i dont need to come (w00t)

So it took 2 years to organise a Championship  Things must be so much easier these days with the Internet etc. The 1st Nationals was arranged in 3 weeks, just shows how times have moved on

The WCRA 40th anniversary looks like being a fun weekend I hope many whippet people, racers showing and obedience will attend with all the proceeds going to charity. Its what owning whippets is all about .good luck with the event :D :D :D
