Thank you for the Congratulations!
Butters was shown by Joe Buchanan, who handled a Pharoah Hound to Group 4 at Crufts a few years back.
The black bitch was in the final cut of four bitches, but she did not get an award. She was indeed Ch. Snow Hill Onyx at Stoneledge. Her sister won our National in 2009 under Magnus Hagstadt.
The BOB is currently #1 Whippet and #1 Hound and is a West Coast dog. The fawn bitch you all seemed to like so well, Tawny, is an East Coast bitch and has been a tough competitor with a lot of big wins as well (I think she may have been #2 Whippet last year--if not then #3 at least) and she was the local favorite as more of her fan base was definitely in the house. Judges don't pay a lot of attention to crowd noise at the Garden, though. Tawny and the Tattersall bitch Annie received the two Awards of Merit which were available, and the black bitch Feather made final cut (that is what they showed--those four weren't a class-they were a cut or shortlist) but judge ran out of awards so she did not get anything.
There were only four males entered this year. I showed the first dog on the video. He is a very sound dog and the only dual champion in the entry.
Everyone knew that the top bitches were the favorites with Chanel and Tawny being the biggest favorites, but also, there are very few male specials being given a top-notch campaign in the US and it is widely perceived that the bitches just have an advantage overall, and they certainly have the most money and handler star power behind them at present. It's just perceived that Whippets at the top right now are a bitch breed, so while there are many male champions who could have been shown, most stayed home. I am only three hours from NY and Butters lives in VA--not sure we would be doing this if we had to fly in. The dog who gets the prize for having travelled the farthest was Am.Jap. Ch. Karasar's Jester, who flew in with his owner, his Japanese handler, and a group of Japanese fans/family etc. for this show--all the way from Japan.
Still, a nice award--BOS. Last year I showed Butters and we ended up where Feather was this year--in the final cut but no ribbon left for us in the end. Still an honor to be shortlisted as a non-campaigned special against top dogs.
It is always fun to show on the green carpet. On the whole, though, I prefer Crufts as a spectator because there is a wider variety of dogs and people go even if they think they have no shot to win.
