Hi, just a silly post to find out what people do over the winter. I know some people still race, some put them away and don't do much at all with them.

Personally i enjoy them more as the pets they are. Love long leisurely walks in the country side, on the beach at Camber Sands etc and the Sundays in with a roast dinner  .

It's nice not to have to worry for a few weeks, about who they're racing on Sunday, are they fit enough, is one of them limping, is he off colour, what's their weight etc etc, just some of the things i worry about on a weekly basis (w00t) .

Don't get me wrong i love all that and i know by the 1st of January i'll be climbing the walls to get back racing (Newmarket here we come). It's just nice to have a little break and enjoy the other side of the racing whippet.

Over the summer i get mine (whippet and lurcher) out lure coursing with a few mates. I have my own stuff amd like to do it as it keeps the dogs sharp and fit.

Over the winter i get them out working. Ferreting by day and lamping at night.

The summer is just a warm up for the winter for me.

I doubt if mine will leave the house much in November and I dont intend on letting them off the lead if they do. December much the same unless its mild, and will, like you be missing the racing by the new year.

I will be back lead walking (for my benifit more than theirs) in Jan sometime.

I ran mine right through the winter the year before last at non ped club near me and had a horrible season that year with injuries. Never again for me. I am going to rest them more this winter after a long season and see if that changes my luck with injuries next year.

I'll be spending it trying to discover Billy's optimum weight! He has raced at all weights between 21lb and 24lbs and I can make a case for all of them.

Obviously HE would prefer to be 26lb but then he'd have to go showing :)

Il b exercising as normal with a few lazy days thrown in

Bow my older bitch will b climbing the wall if she didn't have regular free run n tryin to catch the odd bunny or tree rat !!

Lucy who's been racing all season will of course hav a rest but will still b taken out but least I won't b worrying about her weight

I think free running in the right environment can strengthen them but this is my opinion ,there's no way theyl b staying in

,,in not saying I go out for hours on end but a few walks each day

I always rest mine after the opens have finished because I think they need it :sweating: I still take them out, but haven't much during the last week, its been fireworks constantly!! :rant:I give them more food so they put on weight, apart from Ayda who some days eats 5 meals a day but still remains 18lb.

I run my dogs 3-4 nights a week, in all weather and a day on the weekend ferreting. They thrive on it. All the other days they get an hour free running unless they have had a hard night before then they just get a leg stretch.

Ratting next weekend for mine too. The hint of terrier blood evident in all whippets makes great ratters.

Like i have already said, the winter is the time for fun. The summers too warm anyway lol
