We were walking across the fields today and saw a couple with 3 whippets walking a couple of hundred metres in front of us :)

When they let their whippets off lead  they just ambled off calmly then trotted along just in front of them

So its got us wondering if everyone elses whippets are so calm

Because when we let Leon and Picco off :b for the first 30-40 seconds their completely loopy coursing eachother (w00t)

After that their fine and trot along  but they always have their loopy 30 seconds and up until now we assumed most whippets were like this

But we're wondering now if its just Leon+Picco who are loopy :b

Cheers

Steve

Nope those are unusual I think when I let mine off you can't see them for dust (w00t) (w00t)once they have done that they will slow down a BIT just so they don't miss anything

Mine are the same as yours race in circles for about 10 min's all 8 of them!

I have to let Sky off first for his little run ,then the others go off ..Hell for leather. Sky is very carefull and stays by my side then so he dosnt get bowled over.

Mine just amble along beside me too until we reach the open fields .....then they are off like Racehorses on the Gallops (w00t)

Just have to keep an eye on Kobi - because Oscar bowls him over then grabs his neck (w00t)

I think it depends on how often your whippets are off lead - and of course individual personalities. I have a friend whose two dogs, one is a whippet, the other a whippet cross, are practically always off lead. She also leaves the door open to her unfenced yard on nice days (ok, so she doesn't have a lot of neighbours or busy roads nearby, but it is not that remote either), and the dogs never stray. Needless to say, she has a very strong recall on them. I guess when they are always off lead, they don't feel the need to grasp any opportunity to play.

It should be added that she has chosen her whippet mostly on account of her lineage, that has a reputation for producing very sensible, laid-back whippets. That is not to say that they cannot run or play, only they don't need to be constantly active, and they can be taught when it is appropriate and when it is not. I only wish my puppy will mature into a similar type, but unfortunately, it seems to be disappearing, I suspect because it tends to produce less than enthusiastic show dogs (also, I don't have my friend's natural ability for training dogs...)

Mine take off as soon as there leads are off then slow down to a canter then to a trot

Mine walk calmly for a while and then suddenly go mad, then go back to mooching around, then go mad again, though they do walk very frequently off the lead (2 or three times a day) in a several hundred acre field so they're rather blase about it

I dont think you have anything to worry about Steve, by the sounds of the replies most are the same as yours-mine included!!

Holly has a mad dash, then calms down and has a trot and a sniff, then has another mad dash, and so it goes on till shes worn out!!!

She has a favorite game of finding a stick then running hell for leather while our terrier chases her! (only playing i may add :) ) she darts this way and that knowing full well he cant catch her  she even pauses for a while to let him catch up then runs off again! such a tease!

I may add that her recall is good though

Mine go loopy for the first 10 minutes or so, then calm down.

Trish

My lot go mad for the first 5 mins chasing each other, and then slow down for a good shiff about and when they know we're going back the have another mad 5 mins to get it out of their system.

Tascha and Mysti go totally bananas, they stop for a quick wee, then go hell for leather for the rest of the walk. Their fave is running or *gazelle* jumping through the long grass. This is quite entertaining to watch.

They get a free run off the lead everyday, but we do have to make sure that no one else is around, as Tascha has very poor recall if there is anyone on the field, Mysti has great recall, and comes when asked.

Chance when let off the lead goes straight into hunting mode, chasing 'mind rabbits' (that are just in her head (w00t) ) Binx follows her everywhere, they have a good recall except when something catches thier eye and then there off!!

but I walk them in a HUGE inclosed field with no roads by so I'm not to bothered if they suddenly dash off, as they are always in my view

Binx also loves to 'kangaroo jump' through the long grass, you just can't help yourself laughing at this :D

Mine all go mad too. Having said that I used a quiet laid back stud once and MOST of the litter were really calm and sluggy I loved this but I think as someone else said they were not so animated in the ring as some.

Steve, those dogs you saw 200yrds away may have been 16 and 17 years old, I believe Whippets start calming down about then. ;)
